Dorm Life is great too!

I recently spoke with Jesse James, the President of the Independent Men’s Association (IMA), about dorm life and Honor Scholarship Weekend.  The IMA consists of 30 members, which are elected to lead all of the Independent men on campus.

Residence Halls

  • Martindale Hall
  • College Hall
  • Morris Hall
  • Wolcott Hall
  • Crawford Hall
  • A few college-owned houses

Martindale, the largest dorm, houses approximately 100 men. It also has the greatest variety of rooms, including singles, doubles, and triples. College Hall and Crawford Hall have double rooms and each houses 34-36 men.  Morris and Wolcott, each housing 34 men, have only single rooms with every two rooms joined by a bathroom. College-owned houses near campus house are eligible for juniors and seniors.

Each residence hall has a common area for recreation space, a lounge, and laundry facilities. The College also provides a cleaning service for all of the public spaces.  All are air-conditioned. Additionally, Resident Assistants (RAs) live on each floor or in each building. They are upperclassmen that have been selected to assist residents in developing a community and providing mentorship for underclassmen. Regardless of where you live on campus, you will develop bonds and friendships within your living unit.

Men living in the residence halls dine at Sparks Center. Eating at Sparks provides a unique collective dining experience since faculty, administration, and guests of the College often eat there as well. Students are provided a selection of meal plans as well as a variety of daily food options.

A repeated theme throughout our conversation was, “As an independent, you cannot be shy.”  Jesse added, “Do not be afraid to knock someone’s door and ask questions.” The relationship between Greeks and Independents is strong.  There is a great article in the February addition (page 7) of the Bachelor by Robert Van Kirk titled My Fraternity of Choice: Wabash.  In the opinion he wrote,

“Every man on this campus recognizes the true collective pride within each Wabash student when attending athletic events as the Monon Bell game or the recent Wittenberg game.  I noticed the dissolution of all social boundaries as Independents and Fraternity men united to support our great Fraternity: Wabash College.”
