Things to know for Rush Part 2
During the Rush process you will need to know the definitions to some important terminology.
Bid- A formal invitation to a prospective student (you) to enter the process of joining a fraternity. There are various ways that you may be offered a bid, and the ways of receiving a bid vary by fraternity laws and traditions. Once a bid is extended, the prospective student as three options: accept, decline, or hold.
Accept- A binding decision to join a fraternity. You can accept only one bid. Once a bid is accepted, you have committed to pursuing membership in that fraternity.
Decline- A binding decision in which you reject the bid offered by the fraternity. Once the bid is declined, you may no longer be considered for membership in that fraternity.
Hold- A decision made by you to take time to consider the variety of options. The held bid remains valid until the fraternity declares that it has closed the pledge class. There is no limit on how long you may hold a bid, so take as long as you need to consider your options. Do not feel rushed into a binding decision.
Closed Pledge Class- A declaration made by the fraternity that they will not issue nor accept any further bids. This declaration will be passed on to the IFC president and will be disseminated to the rest of the fraternities and prospective students. This also ends the Dry Rush period for the fraternity.
Dry Rush- A rush period during which no alcohol is allowed to be present. Wabash College designates Honor Scholarship Weekend as a Dry Rush weekend. Therefore, you should not be provided nor consume any alcohol during that weekend.
Dirty Rush- A member of a fraternity speaking badly or exhibiting negative actions toward a different fraternity or organizations on campus. If you feel that you have been involved in a situation that could be considered dirty rush, notify any member of the IFC executive board immediately.
