Working on the Classes of 2011 & 2012
Chip Timmons- We're still working to bring in the Class of 2010, but that doesn't mean it's too soon to look ahead to next year. In fact, we've been recruiting the classes of 2011 and 2012 for nearly 18 months, but this is the time of year when more of those prospects meet with us face-to-face.
A lot of these contacts are made a college fairs like the one I attended at Glendale Mall in Indianapolis last night. While a mall is an unusual venue for this type of event, I think it proved to be rather effective. For one, teenagers still hang out malls, but more importantly, it's a location that easy for people to find.
Over 100 colleges and universities attend and the traffic at the Wabash table was steady. I still brought materials home with me, but met with several interested students and their families throughout the event. A few Wabash men stopped by the table as well, but all were there with their daughters.
One of my "neighbors" last night was West Point and they were represented by David and Cynthia Kroger, parents of Eric Kroger '04. Their other son is currently enrolled at West Point. The Krogers did a nice job last night, so I may approach them about representing Wabash at future events.
The final Wabash connection was the man who put the whole event together. Martin Kirkwood '88 is the Director of College Counseling at Blessed Theodore Guerin High School. Martin started at Guerin when the school opened in 2002 and they will have their first graduating class next year.
I'll close with the most memorable exchange I had with a prospective student last night. The student asked "How hard is it to get into Wabash?" I replied "For you Miss, extremely hard."
