Closing the Books
Chip Timmons - I spent most of Friday afternoon in a meeting providing updates on the next class of Wabash men. Privately, someone asked when did we "close the books" on the Class of 2010. At most places, the answer would be "in a few weeks", but at Wabash, the answer is "four years from now."
As I took my seat at Commencement, I started to scan the list of graduates to see how many of those marching were "my guys", students that I recruited to Wabash. Immediately, I thought back to that question posed to me on Friday.
We don't close the books on a class when they enroll, but when they graduate. Our job isn't to recruit future students, but future alumni. When we evaluate an application, we try to determine if a student's performance predict success at Wabash. I would define success at Wabash as arriving at this day. Now, we can "close the books" on the Class of 2006.
While this day was special for my colleagues and I, it was all the more special for my colleague Mike Reidy H'03. Over the years, Mike has seen hundreds of "his guys" graduate. On Sunday, Mike and his wife, Meegan, watched their son Jonathan cross the stage to accept his diploma. Now there are two Wabash alumni in the family.
