Admission Possible
Chip Timmons - It doesn't need to happen too often, but every once in a while it helps to be reminded of why our work is so important. Today I heard a presentation from the founder of an organization called Admission Possible and I left feeling better about working in admissions.
The organization grew from the inspiration of one man, Jim McCorkell, who had to overcome enormous obstacles to get into college. The goal of this organization is to help talented, economically disadvantaged students gain admission into college. The program includes ACT and SAT test preparation, college application and financial aid advising, supporting students make the transition to college. The program partners with 9 public high schools in the Twin Cities metro area and to date, has placed 98% of its students into college since its founding in 2000.
It was sobering to be reminded that there are talented high school students out there who do not enter high school assuming they'll attend college after graduation. I was left wondering what I could do to provide similar opportunities to students in my territory. The work of Admission Possible needs to catch the attention of more people because it's in everyone's best interest to have more students earning college degrees.
