A Busy Week, but I found time to visit the White House

Chip Timmons - My last week of high school visits in Indiana was a busy one.

On Monday, I visited University High School of Indiana and Guerin Catholic.  Both of these schools have been open less than seven years, but their growth during that time has been remarkable.  University High School is in the middle of an $8 million expansion.  Guerin Catholic is serving students in Hamilton, Howard, and Madison counties and will graduate its first class this spring.  It's been fun to watch these schools take shape over the past few years.

No visit to Hamilton County would be complete without a visit to the White House.  It's not THE White House, but instead a small white house adjacent to the high school that serves as the home of Admissions and Administrative offices for the school.

Other stops in Hamilton County included Noblesville High School, Hamilton Heights High School, and Westfield High School, and two stops at Culver's for lunch.  I love that place and one's scheduled to open in Crawfordsville later this year. One of this year Alumni Admissions Fellows, Andy Starrett '98 teaches at Hamilton Heights and he's still working like he needs to defend his new title.

Tuesday night I found myself at a very unique event, one where education and commerce came together in a very unusual way.  Greenwood Park Mall hosted the Southside Indy College fair on Tuesday Night.  I attended a similar event at Glendale Mall last spring, but this event had a much different feel.

Roughly 70 colleges and universities from around the Midwest sent representatives and upon arrival, reps were sent to one of two locations in the mall.  It took me about five minutes to walk from one location to the next.  Once at my table, I wondered how students would make their way to my location.  You may come to mall to shop, but not for colleges. The students and their parents in attendance proved me wrong.

The fair lasted two hours and I was busy talking with students and parents the entire time.  Many came with questions and had researched Wabash a bit before arriving at the fair. Throughout the evening, I met several students from Center Grove High School who have my brother for class.

Speaking of my brother...Brad Timmons '99, himself an Alumni Admissions Fellow, caught up with me at my last visit this week.  Brad teaches U.S. History and AP Psychology and coaches football and track at Center Grove.  Brad continues to "spread the fame of her honored name" out of both loyalty to his alma mater and constant pressure from big brother. Brad's also rocking a mean goatee this fall and I promised to post a picture so everyone could enjoy.
