Canoe Trip

Mike Reidy -Yesterday was the annual canoe trip hosted by the Admissions Office.   Each year we invite members of the incoming class and prospective students from the surrounding areas – about a 2 hrs drive away.  One of our incoming freshman from Munster, IN brought a friend from California who will be a senior this fall.

The trip always includes current Wabash  students, alumni, coaches, and faculty.  This year 16 members of the Wabash class of 2011 and 15 high school seniors joined  our annual trek.

It is a dry summer in this area and the level of Sugar Creek reflected the lack of rain.  A trip that normally is an hour in fast water, took 1 ½ hrs to 3 hrs.  There was a lot of walking instead of canoeing.  The heavier you were the more walking you did.

Three guys decided to get into one canoe – big mistake.  It was not the best of days to have a 3 man canoe.  These guys tipped over at least 3 times and did a lot of walking.   A lot of laughing could be heard from these guys.  I fared only slightly better.  I had a kayak that seemed to have a “rock magnet” attached.  I was also probably the heaviest on the trip.  At 250 lbs. One tends to sit a little lower in the water than most of the others.

After the trip we returned to campus for a cookout.  Everyone had a great time.  Even the guys in the 3 man canoe said it was great.  A lot of the guys want to do the trip again next year.

View photos from the entire day.
