Fall Travel Preparations Underway

Chip Timmons - Recent stories on www.wabash.edu have highlighted some action on campus in recent weeks as we all prepare for the arrival of the Class of 2011. The Admissions staff has been busy with preparations of our own.

Two new counselors joined our staff this summer, Mike Owens '02 and Marty Schap '05. Since their arrival, both have been involved in a demanding training regimen which some have likened to preparing for a decathlon.  I don't know if our work would be limited to just "ten" events, but you get the idea.

I'm near the end of updating our publications and related web pages for the upcoming year.  In fact, our first big mailing to high school seniors (the application and viewbook) drops today and other mailings (fall visit days, Top Ten, scholarship mailings, etc.) will follow.

Lastly, it's the time to start scheduling high school visits.  Some of our staff will hit the road later this month for the College That Change Lives tour, but the travel season begins in earnest when we start visiting high schools in early September.  If you would like to see when we are scheduled to be in your area, check out each counselor's online travel schedule.

I spoke with a former co-worker yesterday and when I told him I'm in the process of scheduling visits he replied, "Man, I don't miss that." Well, I happen to enjoy it.  I like charting my course, if you will, for the year and seeing where I will go to recruit the next class of Wabash men.  It's probably a bit more enjoyable for me since I'm scheduling fall trips to Florida and Arizona, but it's all business.

Speaking of business, I need to get back to it.  The phone's ringing and a guidance counselor is likely to be on the other end hoping to confirm the date and time of my visit to his or her school.

See you on the road.
