Keeping Austin Weird
Chip Timmons - That phrase can be found on t-shirts throughout Austin and those of us participating in the National Association of College Admission Counseling national conference are here doing our part.
My week started with two days of high school visits in Tulsa, OK. After making the rounds in Tulsa, I headed south to Austin. After jet-setting with CTCL last week, the idea of a relaxing drive through this part of the country sounded much better than hopping on another plane or in this case, two.
I arrived in Austin expecting to find a city on the move, but instead, I was greeted by gridlock as soon as I entered the city limits. At one point, I found myself stationed next to the University of Texas football team’s practice field, so I watched a few reps before traffic started to move.
The NACAC conference provides opportunities for networking amongst high school and college admissions professionals and update sessions on the hot button issues of this profession. I spent most of my time catching up on the latest trends in technology and marketing as well as representing the College at functions like the CTCL reception, IACAC membership meetings, and other events.
NACAC wasn’t the only group in town keeping Austin weird. UT hosted Kansas St. on Saturday and I could hear the roars of the crowd from my hotel and Saturday night. The Pecan St. festival set up shop on famous 6th street and the Austin all-girl rock and roller derby rolled into town on Saturday.
All in all, it’s been a great week that’s provided me with some ideas to bring back to Wabash to help us better serve the students considering Wabash in their college search.
