"English. Just like you"
When I'm on the road, I always make an effort to connect with a few alumni in the cities I visit. My travels brought me to Tulsa earlier this week where I had the opportunity to catch up with Steve Mackin '98.
Steve's the President/CEO of the Southwest Region Medical Center of Cancer Treatment Centers of America. During dinner, we reminisced about our Wabash days, bragged about our kids, and shared a few tales from our careers. After dinner, Steve drove me over to the hospital for a brief tour. While walking through the halls, Steve talked about the challenges of recruiting new staff, the multi-million dollar expansion to his hospital, and how oncologists are able to diagnose cancer by monitoring how certain cells process sugars. I learned that cancer cells process sugars more rapidly than normal cells.
At this point in the conversation, I interrupted Steve and asked "What was your major?". His reply, "English. Just like you." Yeah...just like me. What a great example of how the liberal arts can prepare you for anything and in Steve's case, everything (human resources, medicine, business, leadership).
In a few weeks, the Admissions Office will host the Top Ten Scholarship Visit Day for students ranking in the top ten percent of their class. Part of that day will include a panel of other young alumni who have put their Wabash education to work in remarkable ways. If you know of a young man who might be eligible for this program, put him in touch with our office today.
