Bell Game Information - It's All Right Here

Watch It In Person (Best) - Click here for all the information on tickets. DePauw is completely sold out and we're close. Do not wait - there are no excuses. Watch It In Hi-Def. (Better). HD Net is carrying the game in high definition. There are two options here.
1. Attend a Monon Bell Telecast Party. There are almost 60 sites around the United States where you can watch the game in HD on HDNet with other Wabash fans... Here's the map complete with each location's information. 2. Watch it on HDNet at home. HDNet is a part of the HD packages for both DIRECTV and dish network. On DIRECTV the channels are 79 and 306. On dish network the channels are 362 and 9422. Others may also offer the telecast, depending on your location. To find out if you can get the game at home, click here. Listen To The Broadcast (Good.) Click here to get the information on listening to the game. Note: In C'ville you can listen to 91.3.
Monon Bell Stag - Don't Miss It!

Every year, on the Thursday evening before the Biggest game in college football, the men of Wabash and DePauw get together and roast each other at the Monon Bell Stag. Roast is probably a kind word. We take a brief time out to honor an alumnus of each school who personifies the Spirit of the Monon Bell - this year Wabash's award winner is Jon Pactor '71, a local Indianapolis attorney.
Then it's back to roasting. Don't miss this year's event - it promises to be a one for the ages. Hall of Famer Jake Knott '03 is the Wabash roaster while Indiana business personality Gerry Dick, father of DePauw's quarterback, will be their roaster. Wabash President Pat White will be joined this year by DePauw's President Brian Casey which means the Depauw guys will be out in force. To make a reservation, simply call the Wabash alumni office at 765-361-6360 before November 5, 2009. WAF! Top photo - the 2008 Stag Photo at right - The Spirit of the Monon Bell Award

Sign of the Times - Another Fall Photo

You've seen a lot of pictures on our web site of the fall foliage here on campus. They show a campus exploding with fall color...you can almost smell the leaves burning. I thought I'd mix it up a bit and show you another photo of this fall. That's right, Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer. No good office caught without them. The goal is simple - to keep as many members of the Wabash community as healthy as possible. Funny, even an old crusty fighter pilot we keep around here has been seen using the germ-X stuff. This flu though, it's no laughing matter. Stay healthy!

Zach Manker '06 - A Different Road

Zach Manker '06 might be on a slightly different adventure than most other members of the Class of 2006. You see, Zach is actually teaching Spanish (not much different) in Muscat, Oman (different)! He's teaching at TAISM - The American International School at Muscat. Thanks go out to Hugh Vandivier '91 for finding Zack on the web. You can read about Zach's adventure on his blog.

Wabash and Wooster

Tough to see, I know. That's the Wooster band coming down the hill before the start of Saturday's game. Yes, I like the band a lot and the bagpipes are special, no doubt. But this is a Wabash blog, right? There are several Wabash connections to Wooster: Dr. Scott Douglas '84 - his daughter attends Wooster and plays in the band. Michael Lambert '80 - he was proudly wearing his Wabash sweatshirt at the game. It was Wooster's Parent's Weekend. His son is a freshman there. Dr. John Roberts '83 - his son is a Wooster student. Coach Mac Petty - Wooster is his home town. Dwight and Jamie Watson - their son Evan is a Wooster graduate and was an outstanding defensive end for the Scots. So, there's a Wabash connection here...and, did I mention, I like their band?

Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan - Almost As Good As Being There.
Can't be at Wooster for football? Can be at Mud Hollow for Wabash Soccer? No worries - we have the next best thing! For soccer, you can get live stats right here. In addition to our own coverage (http://www.wabash.edu/kane/realaudio/index.cfm) you can also get the football game via the Wooster telecast. Here's the information form the Wooster web site. "On the Air: Wooster’s football games can be heard live each week in the Wooster area on WKVX 960 AM or anywhere in the world by following links on the radio station’s Web site at http://wkvx.com/. Also, the audio and video from local cable provider Clear Picture, Inc., will be broadcast live over the Web at no charge to the viewer at http://www.teamline.cc/teampage?teamcode=1100, thanks to an agreement with Clear Picture and a donation from the “W” Association, the school’s alumni organization which supports athletics."
Off to Wooster

Off to Wooster in a couple of hours. Wooster is always a great place for football and all things football. The Wooster family is a great group, they have a super campus, and you have to love the band! But of course, the Bagpipes are what makes the band special. Bill Starr '37 told me many years ago we ought to get the Wooster band to make the trip to Crawfordsville and be the half time show whenever we play Wooster in Hollett Stadium. I am still not quite there, but I look forward to the trip to Wooster and the chance to see those guys come over the hill. If you haven't been there, make the trip! Of course, the best part of it all is the football. And there, as much as I like Wooster, I LOVE Wabash. I expect us to win convincingly.

Your Vote Counts - Voting Update!
.jpg)
Wabash College wants you to vote. That's right, you are in the driver's seat as our alumni pick the next Wabash College personalized license plate for Indiana. Vote and you determine the outcome - don't vote and someone else does. Pretty simple. The design above is one of four the college has designed - you can vote now right here. Here's where we stand with over 1,100 votes in the first 24 hours:
Wally Wabash has surprised me, holding a strong second place. The Chapel logo has surprised me as well as I thought there might be a lot of votes for it. There's still time for your vote to count.
Coach Zach Raber's Team in the News

Coach Zach Raber, Wabash Class of 1998, has the Ft. Wayne Carroll High School Girls Cross Country team posting some impressive performances. In fact, WANE in Fort Wayne, Indiana named Zach's team their team of the week this past week. The cross country team just finished as regional champs - their ninth in a row! To see the story and watch the video, click here. Good luck Zach at Semi-State this weekend!

Check Your Mailbox! The Men of 2013

In your mailbox is a letter - President White's photo is on the cover. That letter talks of Wabash in the Fall of 2009 and introduces you to the Class of 2013. Sure, you'll see several from Indianapolis, Indiana...always have and always will. But you'll also see: Chatsworth, CA; Owasso, OK; Nanjing, China; Tucson, AZ; Flossmoor, IL; Hanoi, Vietnam; Kathmandu, India; Cedar Hills, TX; Madison, WI; Nairobi, Kenya; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and even that far away place called Crawfordsville, Indiana! They WERE 250 young men on a journey - they are now 250 Wabash men on a journey.
Their world is substantially different than ours...but one thing remains the same. The education - it will be worth it! Photos: Top and bottom of the letter. Yes, I purposely left the names out of focus so you would look the letter over and, if so inclined, support these young men with a gift to our Wabash.

Wabash Community Service to the Next Level

For the last few years, the Alumni Board of Wabash has led a community service effort called WABASH Day (or weekend). In this case WABASH stands for Wabash Alumni Benefitting and Serving Humanity. This past year we had several projects around the country with about 200 alumni participating. One group has taken the Wabash concept of community service to the next level. The Kansas City Association of Wabash men volunteers every quarter at Harvesters Community Food Bank. Harvesters is truly a community self-help effort and there's no better times than these for our guys to step up. Many thanks to our Wabash group in Kansas City and to their leader Michael Cummings - talk about living Wabash's mission statement!

You and Your Wabash Get Up
A famous alumnus, code named "Wabco", has proposed the blog switch to featuring Wabash fans in their favorite Wabash apparel before our football games. So, starting on Thursday, I'll post photos of you in your Wabash get-up. Simply send me a good photo of you, your family, your friends, etc., and I'll post them on the Grunge report. Make sure to include name, class year, where the photo was taken, and your guess at the score of the Bell game. Email to runget@wabash.edu. Here's Wabco's test submission...

Full House - In Many Respects
.jpg)
Now, that's a FULL HOUSE. Of course, we expect a full house when the Little Giants take on the Tigers on November 14, 2009. You need to know - over 50% of the Wabash tickets have already been sold. There simply are no excuses good enough to come close to supporting a "Well, I just don't have tickets because..." So, make plans now to: 1. Be at the Bell game. 2. Be at the Witt game tomorrow and get the Bell game tickets while you're here.

Fall and Football -The Best Time Of The Year

Out and about early last Saturday morning. Sun peeking over the Arboretum - top of the Chapel aglow - but still in the shades of pre-dawn below. No cars yet blocking the view. Cool and crisp. Life is good. For a few more fall photos, click here.

Wabash vs. Witt. This Saturday - Be Here
.jpg)
Saturday - 1:00 PM kickoff - Wittenberg University at Wabash for football. Students on fall break - plenty of seats in the Hollett House. Both teams 5-0. Witt has top ranked defense in the nation in D-III and the "O" puts a lot of points on the board. Wabash has a very good "D" as well and some serious offensive firepower with multiple running backs and what seems like 84 wide receivers. Should be a great game. Yep, it will be broadcast on the web...but...this is probably the title game for the NCAC and a trip to the playoffs. You can sit at home with your Dell or MacBook Pro...or you can be right here...yelling your head off and cheering the Little Giants to victory. See you Saturday...

Fall Is Upon Us

My experience has been that the maples always fight to the bitter end to change colors but along the way thy produce some neat colors. This picture is the "light pole" special. If you are one of the faithful 9, you'll seen it featured before. Take the zoom, stand on the Alumni office porch, and fire across the street. Great solution on a rainy day like today. Body doesn't get wet but even more important the camera and lens stay dry. As you can see, fall is here. I'll try to get out and about next week for some shots around campus...
Wabash Always Gives...Back
.jpg)
Yesterday we celebrated "Wabash Always Gives...Back" Day. What does it mean? To our students, it means up until this date (from July 1, 2009 until October 8, 2009) they and their families have paid to operate Wabash College. From this point on, the entire operation of the college for the year will be paid for by the combined generosity of the larger Wabash family. That's right - the entire cost. Said another way, 75% of the cost to run this college come from sources other than the students and their families. Today's current crop of students benefit...just like we did when we were here. But with that gift comes a responsibility. For Wabash to remain strong these young men will need to step up and provide the same support for the generations to follow. To make that case, Trustee Ted Grossnickle '73 explained to them in a Chapel talk this bit of history. Ted also explored the various reasons people make gifts to organizations. His Chapel talk was short and right to the point.
As a wrap up, the Wabash LEAD (Linking Education and Alumni Development) committee, led by chairman Mike Warren '93, asked the students to sign a "Thank You" card. The student received ice cream, a "Wabash Always Gives...Back" boomerang, and a handout highlighting the support the college gets from it alumni and friends. Photos: Top- One of the first students to sign the card, with boomerang in hand. Right - Trustee Ted Grossnickle makes a point in Chapel For a few more photos, click here.

Social Media...It's Here!
OK...let's be right up front.
I just bought the book "Facebook - the missing manual" and I am bound and determined to read it...at some point! I have a Facebook account - get funny notes from Wabash alums when I post to my flying friends and get !@#$% notes suggesting I need a life from the fliers when the post changes to other subjects. I Twitter or tweet...but not often or good enough. I get Linkedin...sometimes. I might even have a few photos on my Flickr account. But I don't recall. I have a couple of videos on You Tube...but they tell me my face is better suited for radio. So, the Social Media move hasn't passed me by...it just didn't stop at my front door for very long. But the true beauty of it all - you get the info you want when you want it - and it doesn't cost a thing. For example - you can get scoring updates from our SID superstar Brent Harris from far away places like Allegheny...just follow him on Twitter. You can get the news we post for alumni on Linkedin (right now it's about Bell game tickets) or you can get career services information as well. So, just tune your favorite internet browser to our web page and decide for yourself what you are interested in trying. We offer a money back guarantee! The footnote: we're all relatively new to this and trying to catch up with our students! (Don't laugh - it's true!) So, we're bound to make a few mistakes as we grow into this social media thing. Grow with us - remember it's free.

Meghan Potee - State Champ!
Meghan Potee, a senior at Noblesville HS, is a state champion! Meghan's proud father is Dr. Chris Potee, Class of 1986. Here's part of the report: "Potee's patience and ability to play within herself led to a second round score of 71, giving her a combined score of 147, good enough to crown her the 2009 IHSAA Individual Champion. The Noblesville Senior became the first athlete from her school to win the individual championship in either the boys or girls competition."

Trudy Johnson IS A Winner
Trudy Johnson correctly identified the "socks owner" as Jon Pactor (right), Class of 1971. She also noted that Jon's unique approach to wearing the socks allowed the logo to be low enough to be read beneath the cuff of any dress slacks. Now that's thinking!
Congrats Trudy! She may have had a little bit of an unfair advantage - Trudy is married to Brad Johnson '71, one of Jon's fraternity brothers.
Gotta Be The Socks
My guess is that there is only one man in America who would have this pair of socks as a staple of his wardrobe...can you guess who that Little Giant might be?

Coach Raeburn - His Own Cheering Section

That's head football Coach Erik Raeburn. On his way to the field, he stopped by his own personal cheering section - his daughters. As you can see, they are decked out in full Wabash regalia. Behind every successful man...

Alumni Board Embraces the Strategic Plan

The Alumni Board, at their Homecoming meeting, invited President White and his senior management team to their board meeting to outline the board's initiatives for the next two years. Every initiative is grounded in the college's strategic plan. The board sees it's major areas of concentration as supporting the college's admissions efforts, helping the growth of the college's regional associations, and supporting the Wabash community and it's services to faculty and students. The central focus is to make every effort to engage more Wabash alumni in the life of the college. President White and his staff embraced the board's vision and welcomed their involvement. In the photo, Greg Jania '93, chairman of the board's Wabash Community committee, outlines the way forward for their part of the charter.

Going...But Never Forgotten
.jpg)
Took this photo this morning...work had just started for the day. The old Phi Gam house is yielding its turf. My uncle, Tom Mason '47, was a Phi Gam...and I think my great uncle, Ben Myers '16, was as well. My Uncle Tom wanted my son to join - he looked, but found a home elsewhere. But the real story is the impact of the Phi Gam fraternity, like all of our fraternities, down through the decades. We're sorry to see the house go. How many guys can look back and smile at their FIJI Island or a Homecoming float mysteriously set ablaze? The great thing about Wabash is that the structures may come and go, but the memories and the life-long impacts live on and on. A lot of those memories just moved ever so slightly south on Grant Ave. There's new history being made right there...
