Summertime Once again!

Everything, unfortunately, must come to the end, including my Wabash freshman experience. On Thursday after my English final I began studying for my last final in German.  After studying a while I headed over to the Delt house to say goodbye to my good friend Dylan. I spent my last night studying and in an out of conversation with my mother and sister on Skype. On Friday I studied in the morning then took my German final. After my 2 hour final I said my goodbyes to all of my friends who left that afternoon.  After that, we started the Beta all house clean.  We began the cleaning at 3 PM and did not finish until 3PM the next day. The cleaning was fun because I got to be around all of my pledge brothers but the cleaning to be honest was a little much at times. After the clean on Saturday everyone began to pack up and leave. I felt sad to see everyone go and also to know that for the next few months I will be away from my close friends. All in all it was a great year to be a Wabash man in my ways. I will never forget my freshman experience and if you are a prospective student looking at Wabash, look long and hard. Wabash is one of the best decisions I have made in my young life because it took me out of my comfort zone and made me adjust to new people and a new atmosphere. This summer I will be here at Wabash interning for the Wabash admissions office. Right now I am sitting in an empty fraternity house, with one of my pledge brothers, John Holm, watching about a ton of movie. This is going to be a great summer, and hope to be back on in the fall.

My 100th Blog Entry!

The last week of school feels great, although I still have exams. My exams for this week are spread out which isn’t something I like because it is as if I have more time to worry about my exams rather than getting them over with. On Monday I finished up studying for my first exam in philosophy.  That night all of us freshman had to clean the kitchen and dining for fear of the health inspector. On Tuesday, bright and early, I took my philosophy exam and then took a long deserved nap. That evening I began studying for my next test in English on Thursday. Around 11PM a few of my pledge-brothers and I went to the Spark Center to get breakfast served up by the faculty and staff of Wabash. Wednesday could have been the most boring day of all this week. I decided to go to the library to study and work on a paper. I arrived at the library at 9 AM but did not leave until 5PM, and the worst part is that I didn’t feel like I got much done. I am dreading the end of this week because it will mark the end of my blogging as a freshman, I will have to start cleaning the Beta house (as part of our end of the year clean), and all my friends will leave which will intern increasing the number of hours I am on facebook over the summer!

My First Athletic Letter!

The end to the NCAC Outdoor track and field meet was awesome. Our Wabash team rallied for third place only behind Allegany by two points. After the track meet coach Morgan gave us an inspirational speech about how the next three year is going to be amazing for the Wabash track program. The bus ride going back was long as usual from anywhere in Ohio. We got around 11PM, and although I wanted to go to bed I still had to stay up for the Beta tradition of listening seniors talk about their time here at Wabash. After listening to the seniors I then headed straight to bed around 5AM. Sunday morning I woke up and cleaned the dining room myself for almost two hours.  Then I got ready for the Track and Field banquet. At the banquet I was awarded my first letter for outdoor and indoor track. At this meet I saw everyone else get awarded for their achievements. After the banquet I changed out of my nice clothes and drove to DePauw to meet up with a lady friend on the DePauw track team. She gave me a tour of the DePauw campus.  I even got to see the Beta house at DePauw which is very nice. We hung out and watched a movie. I got back around 9PM, and proceeded to study for my first final in Philosophy. One more week!

NCAC Outdoor Conference!

The rest of my week could not have been more interesting. On Thursday I had my last class as a freshman at Wabash. In my African American Rhetoric and Expressive culture class I gave my presentation on how movies like Soul Plane perpetuate white supremacy. That same day I had my last track practice, which consisted of just a long stretch to get ready for conference. That night I worked on creating a study guide for my Philosophy final. I took a small break to go swimming and cool off and then went back to work. I went to bed fairly early because I knew I had to get up around 5 AM the next day. As expected I got up at 5 AM and made the 6 AM bus for Ohio Wesleyan University. Unfortunately 2 of my teammates did not make the bus and coach has a zero tolerance policy on being late for the bus. After the 5 hour ride to Delaware, Ohio we warmed up and I ran the 400 meter (seasonal pr). Throughout the day there were odd periodical moments of rain which put a damper on the track meet. That same day I ran the 200 meter dash and hurt my knee which affected my time in that race. I am really happy, fortunate and proud to be a Wabash man competing in the NCAC Outdoor Track Conference Championships.

Nearing the Finishl Line!

Monday morning my precious IPod erased all 1438 of my songs. Although it could have been a national security issue, I was calm and collected and began work re-downloading all of my songs back since I did not save them to my computer. Monday turned out to be an alright day minus my IPod. I felt great because it was the last week of classes and track practice. At track practice I focused on my block starts in preparation for conference. Later that night was the last chapter meeting of the year and surprisingly it went very quick. On Tuesday in my African American Rhetoric class presentations began on our final paper. I am scheduled to go on Thursday but I cannot wait to go to finally finish with all of my big projects. Later that night was the last Student Senate meeting of the year. Wednesday could have been possibly the busiest day I have had at Wabash. I had my philosophy class then after I put finishing touches on the Tau Bark Newsletter( as the Beta house New Editor), then I headed to Staples for copies, Post Office to mail them out, and to the Bank to deposit some money, all before lunch. In the afternoon I had my German and English class then track practice. That night I pre-paired for my speech in African American Rhetoric for the next day. I hope the rest of my week isn’t that chaotic.

Lifehouse Weekend

This weekend was decent considering the amount of fun I had. Saturday I woke up pretty late around 10 A.M. I did the usual, reading, laundry, cleaning. Around 12 PM a few of the brothers and I went to do some house Philanthropy work off of route 231. Members of the Wabash community donated money so we could run about 2.5 miles for the fight against child abuse. The winners of the Beta 231 Fun Run were Brian Shelbourne and I. After the run I went back to the house to shower and get ready for the Lifehouse Concert. Before the concert I went to a BBQ of campus which was very fun. I got to the concert at 7PM not knowing that it all started at 9PM so I basically waited around for a long time and socialized. I really didn’t care much for Lifehouse but it was still fun to go to a concert with friends. I had so much fun that I rode the crowd twice! (Never thought I would ever do that!) After the concert I was very tired and my ears were ringing so I just headed on to bed. The next day with my ears still ringing I did all my reading for my English class, and worked on German. In the afternoon since the weather was so nice I went for a 5 (sprinter can run 5) mile run. I spent the rest of the night trying to finish the Beta newsletter which still isn’t done. This week is crunch time and I hope I somehow catch a break.

Decisions Decisions

I felt on Wednesday there hasn’t been a greater need for the weekend. On Thursday I went to my one class as usual then off to do work. That afternoon Coach had some things to take care of so our practice was short. On Friday I could not wait for the day to be over. After all my classes I ran a bit and worked out then went off with a friends to have fun and not think about school work.

A point that I know I should make is where I was this time last year. Last year I was at a crossroad in my life in terms of what college I wanted to attend. I basically worked my list down from 12 schools I was accepted to, down to five. From that five I then went on many visits to make sure I was definite in choice. I went from five to two and to be honest Wabash was not a part of that two because it was an all guy school and it was a huge departure from the part of the country I knew. In that aspect Wabash was definite yes, oddly enough. Since college is a time to try new things and create experiences I decided to take a chance on a small liberal arts college in Indiana. This investment in my future turned out to be something of an interesting decision on my part. Along with Wabash being a smart decision on my wallet, I also had the chance to meet all kinds of new people who share the same intellectual curiosity as I do. If you are a perspective student, I urge you to take a hard look at Wabash when you are at your academic crossroad.
