GO PATRIOTS!

Have you ever been a fan of a team that is not well liked in the area where you live at? Well, I am a Patriots in Colts country. On Sunday night I went around the Beta house and made fun of people about how the Patriots are killing the Colts. In the fourth quarter I decided to head to the library because I felt the Patriots had the game in the bag. BAD IDEA! At the library I received about 15 text messages from different people making fun of me on how the Patriots chocked in the fourth quarter.  At Monday at lunch I was made fun of because of how the Patriots can’t measure up against the Colts. I dismissed these taunts and continue to eat my lunch…in my room.  On Tuesday, my schedule was really busy. I had Classical Rhetoric in the morning and a bunch of little different things to do before track practice. I left track practice a few minutes early to go to have dinner with my church family the Chalmers! I put the directions in my phone and tried to use the GPS to help me find their house, but on the way there I ended up getting a ride. The Mexican dinner was really great and I even had desert. By the end of dinner I had time to walk back to campus and go to my Student Senate meeting. There is never a shortage of this I could be doing here at Wabash. On Wednesday I had my third day of official track practice. Everyone’s ham strings were hurting from the practice the day before, including mine. At the end of practice we did the dreaded mat runs that take everything out of my legs. Wednesday night Ms. Debbie (our beloved cook) made a Thanksgiving feast for us that was amazing. The highlight of this week so far has definitely been having the bell on campus and hearing it ring from across campus. I could even hear the bell ring from the Chalmers home off campus. Besides the bell I am definitely looking forward to Thanksgiving Break! GO LITTLE GIANTS!

TOOK BACK THE BELL

This weekend has been awesome. “WE TOOK BACK THE BELL”. In my last post, I talked about how I never felt closer to Wabash athletics as I did during the Rugby game, but the Monon Bell game made me feel that much closer. On Saturday I woke up early and drove down to DePauw with my pledge-brother Billy, and his cousins. The fun part of that morning was eating hamburgers and hotdogs at 11 AM. The really fun part of the Wabash tailgate was seeing so many alumni I got to know last year who graduated. I enjoyed letting them know much the Beta house has changed and what parts have stayed the same since they graduated. Billy and I tried to sell more Mission trip shirts but ran out of time to do so. I actually forgot my ticket at Wabash, luckily one of my pledge-brothers wasn’t ready to go yet so he got my ticket for me. During the game I was a little worried during the start but after during the second half when we started pulling ahead my voice began to go from cheering so much. After winning the BEL BACK, I along with everyone, stormed the field and greeted all of our winning football players. Once the greeting was over the entire Wabash caravan which consisted of hundreds of cars headed back to Crawfordsville. Billy, I, and his family went out to dinner at Applebee’s. Later that night the Monon Bell went around to every living unit which was a very interesting time. On Sunday in church Pastor Terry made mention of the big win for Wabash which was pretty cool in church. I spend the rest of the weekend doing homework and getting for the week. I have a good feeling that this next week will be so much brighter, more fun, and simply amazing. Cant wait for Thanksgiving break!

Keg Game!

The rest of this week has been pretty swell. The highlight of the end of my week has definitely been the Keg Game at the soccer field here at Wabash. During the game I to be honest never felt as connected to Wabash as a student. I felt like there were so many of my friends and fellow students cheering for Wabash. Some of the chants we were screaming at the DePauw players were suspect but still all in good fun. And of course we won the game by a large margin. That night I entertained a few prospective students because I was locked out of my own room. One of my pledge-brothers/roommate was in there with his girlfriend who he rarely gets to see so, I took the locked door as my cue to go away. I cannot wait for Monon Bell! This game is a game that decided whether we even have a remote chance at getting into the playoffs.

Bell Week!

If you never thought Wabash was fully of traditions then Bell week will definitely change your mind. The fun part about Bell week is all the different interesting things going on and all of the school sprint. On Monday I found out that my Thursday Classical Rhetoric class was canceled and my 8 AM Political Science class was canceled on Friday. This of course means more time for me to sleep in but who knows, I might get up the same time I normally and do some studying. One of the many traditions that involve this week is Alma Mater sing. Our pledge-educator told the pledges to learn the song last Friday so; I was surprised when they actually knew the song well enough to sing it. The Beta pledges came in 3rd place in Alma Mater sing after losing to FIJI who came in 2nd and Kappa Sigma who came in 1st. Besides Alma Mater sing every night of the week the Sphinx Club has cooked hamburgers and hot dogs outside of the Chapel. I liked the idea at first but after standing in line for 20 minutes my I was a little indifferent. Besides the losing to DePauw in swimming and the debates this week, we have redeemed ourselves in beating them in volleyball, and most likely the Keg Game on Friday and in football on Saturday. Although I feel under the weather I cannot wait for the Chapel Talk tomorrow!

Oh, What a Weekend!

This weekend has been one of the better by far. On Saturday morning I woke up early around 8AM and did some C&T reading. Around 10AM I along with one of my pledge-brothers (Billy Powers) packed up all the shirts we were selling for the mission trip to Botswana into his car and drove over to the football field. We set up our table and even had business in a few minutes. The day was particularly windy so our poster board and t-shirts were flying around everywhere. Billy left to have breakfast with the basketball team because they were having a scrimmage later that day. While I was at the stand by myself I overheard the Hiram College head football coach talking to his entire team. He was explaining how they are David and Wabash is Goliath. I laughed to myself because I already knew the outcome of the game. I was actually surprised when the one of the Hiram coaches came up to me and shook my hand. He then asked me if I was running track again for Wabash. This took me by surprise because I didn’t think anyone really noticed who I was. Besides that in the morning the rest of my day consisted of me meeting people and explaining what the shirts were for and making about 1000 for the mission trip. I was actually surprised because it was really hot for November (72). Hopefully that nice weather can stay for Monon next weekend.  That night was our Soiree party, so basically a semi formal. Everyone dressed up and it was a really good time. On Sunday I woke up early, did laundry and went to church. That afternoon we had a longer study table for the pledges so they could get more of their work done. I think this week will be an interesting Bell week because I’m not a freshman anymore.

Conclave!

The rest of my week has been quick and painless. On Thursday night I went to a talk about Latino identities in American politics for my Political Science class. I thought the talk was interesting because it gave me a new perspective on minority perspectives on being American that I never knew.  Friday during my Political Science class we had the same speaker come back and talk about difference races in relation to their identification of racial terms. The rest of the day I didn’t have that much to do in my classes since most of my classes are starting new topics.  After my last class at 12:10PM I had lunch, prepared my work for the weekend, talked to a few pledges about life, and then headed off to the gym.  After working out I had a few minutes to get ready for the Beta Conclave event in Indianapolis. The event was very interesting. Everyone was dressed up really nice and all the Beta chapters in Indiana were present as well as some from Ohio. I thought it was really great meeting different Beta alumni from recent graduates to even a famous Beta Senator. I was surprised at how well organized and vast the Beta Theta Pi fraternity is! After Conclave I came back to Wabash and helped my pledge-brother Billy Powers create a poster board for the shirts we are selling tomorrow for the mission trip to Botswana Africa. Hope I can get some sleep this weekend!

I Think I Might Be Turning Into a Cville Native...

Thinking about this time last year I didn’t realize how bright it gets when we move forward one hour. For the one obvious reason, on Monday morning at 7:45 the sun was up bright and shining which was the complete opposite last week. This week I experience an overload of work that had been pushed back till Wednesday. Although I was happy some of my work was pushed back I was upset that Wednesday was going to be one crazy day. On Wednesday I had two tests and one paper due, along with all the reading and work. Thankfully I worked though all of my school work like a real Wabash man does and even had time to attend all of my regularly scheduled club meetings and track practices. Looking back at where I was last year I had already ordered my plane ticket home to RI. Come to think of it, it hasn’t even crossed my mind on when and how am I going to get home for the holidays. I like to attribute this to me coming into my own here at Wabash and even in Crawfordsville. I have met so many people and learned a lot, but as the famous quote goes “there is no place like home”. I am pretty sure I need t put finding out what my plans are for Thanksgiving are, on my agenda as well. My plan for the rest of the week is to work ahead so that my weekend is clear and relax central!

P.S

Do not forget prospective students, this Friday is Top 10 Day here at Wabash! For more information check out the future student section on the home page!
