Last Week Home...
I thought my last week at home would be sad because I would have to leave the place I love so much. I have to say it was the direct opposite. Being at home was great but it did get boring after a while, plain and simple. I tried to spend the majority of my week out with old friends. Tuesday was a bit of a rushed day for me. In the early afternoon I went back to my Middle/High School (Times Squared Academy) to mentor to the now seniors about college and see all of my former teachers. I was happy to see my old school hasn’t changed much; although it has improvements in many areas. I showed the senior class my binder from my freshman tutorial on the Supreme Court. They were horrified at how many articles I read and papers I wrote. In the mist of the students being horrified I was still able to collect names from the senior and junior classes that have potential as Wabash men (I’m keeping my fingers crossed!). Later that afternoon I went to my old job of three years during high school, the Rhode Island State House, House of Representatives. I liked the fact that people did not forget my face and still remembered who I am.
Later that night I went out with my friends to watch the movie Seven Pounds at the mall. Unfortunately, I found the movie to be down right depression. On Wednesday I went to a friends house and hung out all day playing crazy card games, and watching the movie Super Bad , which I still don’t find all that funny. Thursday I made the twenty five minute journey up to Massachusetts to visit my cousins before I leave. My little twelve year old cousin, who always looks up to me, beat me very badly at Wii Sports. As a child I really wasn’t encouraged to play video games and now that I am older I find myself trying to regain my childhood with various levels of success. But, before we got to play the Wii I made sure my cousin’s homework was all finished. He needs to get good grades in order to get into Wabash! Friday was another incredibly busy day for me. In the morning I went to get my haircut. In the afternoon I went back to the Rhode Island State House to the State Intern office. Two summers ago I had an internship through the Intern Office at the Rhode Island Supreme Court. This year I am going back
for a paid internship through either the Rhode Island Attorney Generals Office or the Rhode Island Commission on Human Rights. Both internships would be good resume builders, and it really helped to know that I will definitely have a spot in one or the other. I am still trying to keep my options open for any summer opportunities in Indiana. After my successful interview I went to visit my old youth organization Youth In Action and then went on to an Alumni Party at the college access program I was apart of in Providence called College Visions.
As I type right now I am doing a ton of laundry and packing my backpack. Tomorrow I have to wake up for my 2pm flight out of T.F Green Airport. I can definitely say that while at home I learned a lot about myself and what I want out of relationships. I am going to miss home, but nothing beats being on my own at college!
John Pennington
John Pennington has an old way of attracting attention to himself. Besides his odd sense of humor, his laugh (that usually accompanies his jokes) is kind of awkward in its own right. I have gotten to know John (or as he is more formally called Pennington) really well over fall break. He spent time to giving me a tour of the city of Indianapolis rather than spending time with his girlfriend. Not only that, but his family showed me the same kindness. What is intriguing about the Pennington’s is that they are not strangers to New England. John has told me of trips to Maine during the summer to visit family. In addition to visiting, quite truthfully the best parts of our nation, he is also very athletic. John attended North Central High School in Indianapolis and will be a star player on the Wabash College Baseball team.
