Sore as can be...
This week so far has been enjoyable. On Monday I had class as usual but sat down with recruits in the Allen Center, talking about the benefits and drawbacks from coming from out of state to Wabash. That night after track practice I was struck with an ultimatum, I could have either gone to the JV Basketball game or I could have gone to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day held by the MXI in the Chapel. Well, I decided to go to the speech and was very touched. The speaker for the night was Dr. Cain Hope Felder who is a Professor of Theology at Howard University. He talked about the irony between Martin Luther King Day Jr. and the inauguration happening the next day ushering in a new chapter in American diversity. At this event a couple of my buddies from track (Reginald Steele and Wesley
Chamblee), and a good friend (Deonte Singfield) performed a very good musical selection. I was extremely impressed with the MXI and how the entire evening came together. On Tuesday morning I had to say goodbye to the three recruits I had gotten to know from Dallas, Texas. I feel like I could really understand their indecisiveness in choosing a college. I really hope they make the trip up to Crawfordsville in late August for Freshman Saturday. After bringing the recruit’s back to Trippett Hall and exchanging facebook addresses, I headed off to class. That afternoon track practice really took a toll on my body. I remember feeling really sore after practice. I’ve always felt sore after practice in high school, and to be truthful, I actually like the feeling, but this feeling was just uncomfortable soreness. Tuesday night was my first Student Senate Meeting. For this first
meeting everyone had to dress up nicely in suits, which made the feel of being a Senator more legitimate. While in the Senate meeting I was nominated to the Committee on Community Service, which is something I know I will do well in. That night after the Senate meeting I did some school work then headed straight to bed. My body was too sore for me to be up and about. Wednesday so far has been an alright day. My body is still sorer than ever, and I now have a sore throat. Hopefully track practice won’t take everything out of me.
John Holm
John Holm is a big kid. John hails from Naperville, Illinois and plays football and baseball at Wabash. John is known for his hunting skills and always having a Venison stick in his mouth. He has told me stories of how he always goes hunting with his Dad during the holidays. In addition to being a good hunter, John doesn’t know his own strength. Many times he will be joking around and really inflict pain on a few of my pledge-brothers. If it wasn’t for his friendly disposition and amount of compassion one would think he is all about hurting people. Although John is a kind fellow he is also deaf. Every time we include him in a conversation he always yells “huh”, or “what’d you say?!” Although he can’t hear for his life, I love him anyway.
