Personal Bests and Adventures!
I have never been in such a frantic rush to get places in my life. On Saturday I woke up ready and pumped for my only race of the day at the NCAC Indoor Track Championships, the DMR (Distance Medley Relay). The track team had breakfast at the hotel then boarded the character bus to head back to Denison University for the final day of the competition. The first event up for the day was the men’s high jump. Our only entry into the high jump was my good friend and classmate, Wes Chamblee. I was surprised to see the level of athleticism he showed. He ended up winning first place in conference for the high jump. Then
there was a decent intermission in the middle of the meet and I caught my friend Lemi sleeping AGAIN at a track meet. After the intermission was my race. I had to match the rest of the relay team in attire so instead of wearing my usual speed tights, I had to wear distance short shorts that didn’t look or feel comfortable. I ran my personal best all season in the 400 meter leg of the DMR at a time of 51.3. Right after I finished my race I packed up all of my stuff, grabbed my luggage, said my good bys to the team, talked to Coach Morgan, and bolted for the door. Mr. White (my pledge-brother Donavan’s father) drove me 30 miles to the airport in Columbus, OH. I was still sweating from my race by the time I checked in at the airport. By this time it was around 5PM, and once though security I had my second meal of the day which consisted of crackers and Gatorade. I took off from Columbus on-time and landed in Memphis where I had an hour layover. Then I too off from Memphis and headed down to Montgomery, Alabama where a chipper Professor Timmerman greeted me at the airport. After I was picked up I made sure to text about a thousand people to
let them know I was all set. At the hotel in Selma, Alabama the rest of my class regaled me with stories on how the road trip down south went. The next day we all woke up early and went to a breakfast where the guest of honor was Eric Holder (the US Attorney General). After we had the breakfast we moseyed on over to church as part of our African American Rhetoric class. The guest of honor this time was supposed to be Jesse Jackson but he did not show up. We decided to head on over to the historic Selma Civil Rights Bridge Crossing after lunch to participate in the bridge crossing. The weather could not have been any HOTTER, especially since we all were still in our church clothes. At the historic bridge crossing I was able to see the historic Alabama River, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Maxine Waters. I was even fortunate to take pictures with Al Sharpton and Jesse James. After freshening up, we as a class took the hour journey to York, Alabama (west Alabama), which was the home of fellow student Gary James. His mother had a tasty meal planned out for us in a local museum. After the excellent home cooked meal we sat around and talked for a while, looked at beautiful art, and made plates to go. If this weekend is like the week to come I can not wait because this is an interesting adventure.
