GO PATRIOTS!

Have you ever been a fan of a team that is not well liked in the area where you live at? Well, I am a Patriots in Colts country. On Sunday night I went around the Beta house and made fun of people about how the Patriots are killing the Colts. In the fourth quarter I decided to head to the library because I felt the Patriots had the game in the bag. BAD IDEA! At the library I received about 15 text messages from different people making fun of me on how the Patriots chocked in the fourth quarter. At Monday at lunch I was made fun of because of how the Patriots can’t measure up against the Colts. I dismissed these taunts and continue to eat my lunch…in my room. On Tuesday, my schedule was really busy. I had Classical Rhetoric in the morning and a bunch of little different things to do before track practice. I left track practice a few minutes early to go to have dinner with my church family the Chalmers! I put the directions in my phone and tried to use the GPS to help me find their house, but on the way there I ended up getting a ride. The Mexican dinner was really great and I even had desert. By the end of dinner I had time to walk back to campus and go to my Student Senate meeting. There is never a shortage of this I could be doing here at Wabash. On Wednesday I had my third day of official track practice. Everyone’s ham strings were hurting from the practice the day before, including mine. At the end of practice we did the dreaded mat runs that take everything out of my legs. Wednesday night Ms. Debbie (our beloved cook) made a Thanksgiving feast for us that was amazing. The highlight of this week so far has definitely been having the bell on campus and hearing it ring from across campus. I could even hear the bell ring from the Chalmers home off campus. Besides the bell I am definitely looking forward to Thanksgiving Break! GO LITTLE GIANTS!

TOOK BACK THE BELL

This weekend has been awesome. “WE TOOK BACK THE BELL”. In my last post, I talked about how I never felt closer to Wabash athletics as I did during the Rugby game, but the Monon Bell game made me feel that much closer. On Saturday I woke up early and drove down to DePauw with my pledge-brother Billy, and his cousins. The fun part of that morning was eating hamburgers and hotdogs at 11 AM. The really fun part of the Wabash tailgate was seeing so many alumni I got to know last year who graduated. I enjoyed letting them know much the Beta house has changed and what parts have stayed the same since they graduated. Billy and I tried to sell more Mission trip shirts but ran out of time to do so. I actually forgot my ticket at Wabash, luckily one of my pledge-brothers wasn’t ready to go yet so he got my ticket for me. During the game I was a little worried during the start but after during the second half when we started pulling ahead my voice began to go from cheering so much. After winning the BEL BACK, I along with everyone, stormed the field and greeted all of our winning football players. Once the greeting was over the entire Wabash caravan which consisted of hundreds of cars headed back to Crawfordsville. Billy, I, and his family went out to dinner at Applebee’s. Later that night the Monon Bell went around to every living unit which was a very interesting time. On Sunday in church Pastor Terry made mention of the big win for Wabash which was pretty cool in church. I spend the rest of the weekend doing homework and getting for the week. I have a good feeling that this next week will be so much brighter, more fun, and simply amazing. Cant wait for Thanksgiving break!

Keg Game!

The rest of this week has been pretty swell. The highlight of the end of my week has definitely been the Keg Game at the soccer field here at Wabash. During the game I to be honest never felt as connected to Wabash as a student. I felt like there were so many of my friends and fellow students cheering for Wabash. Some of the chants we were screaming at the DePauw players were suspect but still all in good fun. And of course we won the game by a large margin. That night I entertained a few prospective students because I was locked out of my own room. One of my pledge-brothers/roommate was in there with his girlfriend who he rarely gets to see so, I took the locked door as my cue to go away. I cannot wait for Monon Bell! This game is a game that decided whether we even have a remote chance at getting into the playoffs.

Bell Week!

If you never thought Wabash was fully of traditions then Bell week will definitely change your mind. The fun part about Bell week is all the different interesting things going on and all of the school sprint. On Monday I found out that my Thursday Classical Rhetoric class was canceled and my 8 AM Political Science class was canceled on Friday. This of course means more time for me to sleep in but who knows, I might get up the same time I normally and do some studying. One of the many traditions that involve this week is Alma Mater sing. Our pledge-educator told the pledges to learn the song last Friday so; I was surprised when they actually knew the song well enough to sing it. The Beta pledges came in 3rd place in Alma Mater sing after losing to FIJI who came in 2nd and Kappa Sigma who came in 1st. Besides Alma Mater sing every night of the week the Sphinx Club has cooked hamburgers and hot dogs outside of the Chapel. I liked the idea at first but after standing in line for 20 minutes my I was a little indifferent. Besides the losing to DePauw in swimming and the debates this week, we have redeemed ourselves in beating them in volleyball, and most likely the Keg Game on Friday and in football on Saturday. Although I feel under the weather I cannot wait for the Chapel Talk tomorrow!

Oh, What a Weekend!

This weekend has been one of the better by far. On Saturday morning I woke up early around 8AM and did some C&T reading. Around 10AM I along with one of my pledge-brothers (Billy Powers) packed up all the shirts we were selling for the mission trip to Botswana into his car and drove over to the football field. We set up our table and even had business in a few minutes. The day was particularly windy so our poster board and t-shirts were flying around everywhere. Billy left to have breakfast with the basketball team because they were having a scrimmage later that day. While I was at the stand by myself I overheard the Hiram College head football coach talking to his entire team. He was explaining how they are David and Wabash is Goliath. I laughed to myself because I already knew the outcome of the game. I was actually surprised when the one of the Hiram coaches came up to me and shook my hand. He then asked me if I was running track again for Wabash. This took me by surprise because I didn’t think anyone really noticed who I was. Besides that in the morning the rest of my day consisted of me meeting people and explaining what the shirts were for and making about 1000 for the mission trip. I was actually surprised because it was really hot for November (72). Hopefully that nice weather can stay for Monon next weekend. That night was our Soiree party, so basically a semi formal. Everyone dressed up and it was a really good time. On Sunday I woke up early, did laundry and went to church. That afternoon we had a longer study table for the pledges so they could get more of their work done. I think this week will be an interesting Bell week because I’m not a freshman anymore.

The rest of my week has been quick and painless. On Thursday night I went to a talk about Latino identities in American politics for my Political Science class. I thought the talk was interesting because it gave me a new perspective on minority perspectives on being American that I never knew. Friday during my Political Science class we had the same speaker come back and talk about difference races in relation to their identification of racial terms. The rest of the day I didn’t have that much to do in my classes since most of my classes are starting new topics. After my last class at 12:10PM I had lunch, prepared my work for the weekend, talked to a few pledges about life, and then headed off to the gym. After working out I had a few minutes to get ready for the Beta Conclave event in Indianapolis. The event was very interesting. Everyone was dressed up really nice and all the Beta chapters in Indiana were present as well as some from Ohio. I thought it was really great meeting different Beta alumni from recent graduates to even a famous Beta Senator. I was surprised at how well organized and vast the Beta Theta Pi fraternity is! After Conclave I came back to Wabash and helped my pledge-brother Billy Powers create a poster board for the shirts we are selling tomorrow for the mission trip to Botswana Africa. Hope I can get some sleep this weekend!

I Think I Might Be Turning Into a Cville Native...

Thinking about this time last year I didn’t realize how bright it gets when we move forward one hour. For the one obvious reason, on Monday morning at 7:45 the sun was up bright and shining which was the complete opposite last week. This week I experience an overload of work that had been pushed back till Wednesday. Although I was happy some of my work was pushed back I was upset that Wednesday was going to be one crazy day. On Wednesday I had two tests and one paper due, along with all the reading and work. Thankfully I worked though all of my school work like a real Wabash man does and even had time to attend all of my regularly scheduled club meetings and track practices. Looking back at where I was last year I had already ordered my plane ticket home to RI. Come to think of it, it hasn’t even crossed my mind on when and how am I going to get home for the holidays. I like to attribute this to me coming into my own here at Wabash and even in Crawfordsville. I have met so many people and learned a lot, but as the famous quote goes “there is no place like home”. I am pretty sure I need t put finding out what my plans are for Thanksgiving are, on my agenda as well. My plan for the rest of the week is to work ahead so that my weekend is clear and relax central!

P.S

Do not forget prospective students, this Friday is Top 10 Day here at Wabash!
All Over the State This Weekend!

This weekend was supposed to be fun. Turns out it was mildly interesting. I was supposed to leave town Friday night but had a change of plans and did homework. Around 10PM I went over to the Lambda Chi house, all the way across campus, to watch the movie 1408, with my friend Zach and his associate brothers. The movie was scary to a point. After a while I felt that the movie was trying to scare me over an over again with the same material. The next day I woke up to an empty room. Both of my roommates were off to different sporting events representing Wabash while I was in my room all alone. I accomplished some school work then got dressed and headed out to Ball State University in Muncie, IN for the night. To be honest, I really didn’t like it. I felt Ball State was just a dreary, generic, large school. I am not trying to doubt anyone who went there; I am just saying…I didn’t care much for it. After hanging out at Ball State for the night, on our drive back to Wabash Sunday morning I received a call from one of my pledge-brothers. Turns out one of my pledge-brothers was stuck in Bloomington, IN and didn’t have a way of getting back to school. So, when I got back to Crawfordsville around 12PM, borrowed another pledge-brothers car and drove an hour and a half to Bloomington and back. I think the fact that I had the instinct to just get up and help one of my pledge-brothers out really speaks to how close of a pledge class we are. Besides I have only been to Bloomington four times, and on the way down and back I really wasn’t really paying attention. My not paying attention made the ride down to Bloomington interesting. This week on Wednesday I have two tests and one paper due, so I am anticipating long nights. Next weekend looks like real fun with the Beta Conclave, and our Soiree.

Well, What Do Ya Know...

The end of my week has been the week of the New Englander. As odd as that sounds it is true. On Thursday after my one class I went to the library to get a head start on my weekend work. After printing out my work I decided to head back to the Beta house. Right when I walked out of the library I saw and greeted Ethan Rowe! Now if you have been diligently reading my blogs you would have noticed that Ethan Rowe is the only alumni I have ever met from RI. Before I came out to Wabash for freshman Saturday, we had lunch and talked about what I can expect during my freshman year. I was surprised to see him walking around campus, but turns out he was here for a teacher’s recruitment event. That night I spent my time studying for my Philosophy of logic test. At the Beta house we have a long tradition of performing reverse trick-or-treating. This entails that the pledges go around to every room and give the brothers candy! The point is that if you this during your freshman pledge-ship, then you might have three more years of receiving candy through our tradition. On Friday right before my logic text I saw a student decked out in all Boston Red Sox gear. I asked him where is he from and he told me he was from Boston. I was immediately surprised because I honestly thought I was the only student from New England. The few minutes we had before the test we talked about how we got to know about Wabash in New England. I think it is very funny how Wabash is a bigger place than you might think.

Monday in C&T, I was given a paper that was due the next Monday which was about 4-6 pages. In my Logic class I received news of a test on Friday. On top of that there is always the homework, readings, club meetings, fraternity meetings, track practices and everything else. I find it interesting I am finding less and less time to relax during the school week since I am so bogged down (which is a good thing). To add to my stress this week I had an internship interview on Tuesday in Indianapolis. I had to wake up extra early to get dresses up in a suit and tie, plus drive to Indy by 8:30AM to Bakers and Daniel downtown. The job interview was for the special events intern position at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum over the summer. The interviewer looked at my resume and mentioned to me that that position might not suit me, which took me by surprised. She then suggested other internships that would be a better fit for me at the Museum which after think about it for a while, seems like a blessing-in-disguise. Since I had that internship interview at 9AM in Indy, I missed my 9:45 classical rhetoric class (which just so happens to be my favorite class). One student (who will remain nameless) decided to put my cell phone number on the board so that after class everyone would txt me asking me why I wasn’t in class, since I am a stickler when it comes to class attendance. Well, his plan backfired since the class has over 20 people and I only got 5 text messages. I hope he has a pretty good excuse since I’m going to be in class on Thursday!
Costume Change

As expected the rest of my weekend was very fun. On Saturday afternoon after coming back from IU, I got down to cleaning a little before starting my homework. I did homework up until about 8PM when I began hearing blaring music coming from about 10 different rooms in the house. At this time I knew people were putting on their costumes for the Halloween party. I knew I better start getting ready to. So while trying to get ready I discovered my Rick James costume was not complete! I couldn’t find a good enough shirt to go with the extremely tight jeans I had. So I decided to make a quick costume change and become the character Tyrone Biggums from the Chappelle Show. What was funny is that I had all the cloths in my closet to complete the homeless, street bum look. After I was done with my costume I went around to see everyone else’s, and I was surprised on how creative everyone was. Some of my pledge brothers were geeks, convicts, and cartoon characters. After the party the night ended with me hanging out in an upperclassman’s room eating pizza. Sunday I woke up early to do laundry and read. I went to the basement to fold laundry for a few minutes before church, but while I was down there the people I ALWAYS go to church with just so happen to leave without me. So I had to borrow one of my pledge-brothers cars to go to church. After church I went over to Brock Grahams house to finish my homework because I knew it would be completely silent. This week looks pretty good with a summer internship interview on Tuesday and a test on Friday.

IU was the Start of My Weekend

The final days before the weekend are the hardest days to get through. Sometimes it seems like Thursdays and especially Friday mornings drag on for so long. On Thursday in Classical Rhetoric it was obvious that many other students who were taking the class felt the same way I do due to the attendance of the class. That night I went to AMPD where our guess speaker talked about the Jesuit beliefs which were interesting. Friday is finally here. At noon when classes ended I went to the bank to take out some money for the weekend, talked to my dad on the phone, and played (my new favorite) Café World on facebook for a while. One of my pledge-brothers (Jeremy Coons) contracted Swine Flu (H1N1). So he instead of getting the entire house sick he stayed in his room and called if he needed anything. I was nice enough to make him a sandwich for lunch and bring it to his room. Around 5PM a good friend (Alan Tom) and I drove down to Indiana University in Bloomington to get away from Crawfordsville. I was basically overjoyed because I’ve been to IU twice but only for track meets and I haven’t gotten a chance to see the campus. On our way down there we witnessed a fender bender, listen to LMFAO and Jay-Z, and ate Taco Bell. Hopefully the rest of my weekend is just as much fun.

Where is the Fire At? 1st in Cross Country!!!!

Oh, the days of lounging around during break are over. I finally have daily obligations I need to attend to, and lots and lots of reading to do for classes. On Monday we didn’t have our regularly scheduled Bible study because the guys leading it caught, something along the lines of the flu (swine flu…cough) On Tuesday in Classical Rhetoric we talked about Enthymeme. I made the point that in humor Enthymeme can be misunderstood because it leaves too much up to the audience member to interpret. This for some strange reason was translated as “Andre, has no sense of humor”, which doesn’t surprise because we then watched the Daily Show which wasn’t all that funny. This week in track we have it off, so I have been working on my hand-eye coordination by playing racket ball. Let’s just say I am really bad at racket ball. That evening after my Student Senate meeting I came back to the Beta house. The house looked as if there was a strobe light party going on inside but to my “amazement” someone managed to bang up against the fire alarm, triggering it. Good thing it wasn’t too cold outside because we were out there for a while. On Wednesday I was glad that we were finally moving on to different topics in my classes. In Philosophy of Logic we moved from derivations to sentence analyzation (which was a blessing). That afternoon I ran in the IM Cross Country Race. I at first didn’t want to go all out but I decided to help out Beta and run well. And run well is what I did! Jimmy Kervin and I took the lead for Beta. Together we began to slowly overtake other teams. Although the faculty “won” the race. The Beta house came in first over all because we had so many top finishers. Since the highlight of my week was bringing the trophy back to our house, I hope the rest of the week can be just as exciting.

Weekend for Football!

This weekend was, when all was said and done, bitter sweet. On Saturday I woke up bright and early to give tours to prospective students. I must say I do miss giving tours on a regular basis, and I encourage any student remotely thinking of looking at Wabash College to schedule a tour. Although it was a brisk morning (weather wise) I still managed to give tours to 2 baseball players, and 1 tennis player. After the tours I changed into more casual attire. Then it was time for the much awaited football game against Wittenberg. I was amazed on how good Witt was. I thought the game was going to go into overtime scoreless. Unfortunately we had our first conference loss in 3 years by 3 points. The QB in the game, Josh Miracle who is a current junior in the Beta house, did very well. After the game I went to Lafayette to have dinner at the original Arnies Pizzeria with the church family. To my (and everyone else’s surprise) Purdue University beat Ohio State in football, so the traffic in West Lafayette was amazing with so many happy Boilermaker fans! The pizza was so good and was a little better than the Arnies in Crawfordsville. Back at school I spent the rest of the night hanging out, not doing much, and did a little reading. Sunday morning began as it usually does with me doing laundry, doing a little reading, going to church. This week after church was a little different because Josh’s girlfriend needed to catch her flight back to school. Josh had football practice so I volunteered to drive her to the airport in Indy. I was a little skeptical at first being an out-of-towner but I knew I remember the way and got her to the airport on time. When I got back I finished my laundry, and spent the rest of the night on school work. I found it very nice to see the house fill back up again, seems like fall break left this house completely vacant. Now starts the countdown to Thanksgiving Break!

P.S

GO PATRIOTS! Sunday afternoon I witnessed the biggest blowout in NFL history.59 to 0….wow!

YUCK! Well Cannot Like Everything...

Fall break has been good to me so far. On Thursday after driving back from DePauw, I preceded to sleep in till 2PM. I woke up talked to a few people then went for a run. I really didn’t realize how chilly it was outside. While on the run I also noticed how the trees had many different colors on their leafs which reminded me of a New England fall. I checked in with a few friends from back at home and what do you know, it’s snowing already in New England. THANKFULLY, it has not started here! Later that night, I watched the movie Dumb & Dumber, with a few friends. I never knew that that movie was set in Providence, RI. Everyone thought it was funny that they made Rhode Island jokes, but I didn’t laugh! I ended up going to bed early only because I was scheduled to go out with my church family the next morning bright and early. As scheduled I woke up early and went with the Chalmers to the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival! The festival was interesting because there were those little knickknacks you know you could never live without. In addition to those little knickknacks there was also a plethora of food! Although I am not opposed to lots of food, I am opposed to deep fried everything! I was surprised on how many things were fried then served as “delicious treats”. First we had cinnamon pretzels, which were really good. Then my sister, Lindsey, bought FIRED CHEESE! (YUCK!) I had a fried tenderloin which…wasn’t so bad either. After getting back to Wabash I took time to relax a little more then went to the (a completely empty) Allen Center to work off that tenderloin. I spent the rest of the night making a trip to Wal-Mart and Taco-Bell. I cannot wait for this weekend! I have a few tours to give to new recruits Saturday and then I am hanging out with the church family more! I hope I have time to get my homework done before the break ends!
