Coach's Corner - "Showing Signs of Improvement"

We were really excited to get our second conference win on the road at Kenyon College.  I believe we are showing signs of improvement. In the preseason, we set three goals for are team. The goals focused on our style of play, rather than wins and losses or yards gained. It was our hope that after watching us play, people would use these three goals as adjectives to describe our team. The three goals are to play physical, play fast and play smart.

Our play has been more physical. We have run the ball better each week raising our rushing total from 110 yards to 217 yards. It has really impacted our play in the red zone. The first week we scored only two of four opportunities in the red zone. Since then, we have scored 10 of 12 times in the red zone. Our defense created just one takeaway in our first game, compared to six takeaways this past week, a direct result of playing more physical.

We are playing faster, too. If you watched film of our defense from week one and then film from this past Saturday, you would think you were watching a different team. Our guys are playing much faster. They are more comfortable and confident in our scheme and it really shows.

The guys have played smarter as well. We cut our penalty yardage in half from the first week when we were nailed with 13 penalties for 128 yards. There are also fewer breakdowns on the field. We haven’t eliminated all of them yet, but we are showing signs of improvement!
