A Fresh Perspective
Moving on from high school football is a major obstacle for most players, as it definitely was for me. I vividly remember losing in the second round of sectionals last year, and having to walk off the field knowing that was the last time I would ever be a part of the “Friday Night Lights” atmosphere. I felt as if football could never be the same as high school, but that feeling changed completely once I decided to come to Wabash College. At first, I thought to myself “Why would I ever decide to come to a school of 900 men out in the middle of no-where and play football?” But it makes me laugh now, whenever I recall asking myself this, because I know this has been one of the greatest decisions I’ve made in my life so far. I remember the very first day during check-in; I was so nervous, and to be honest a little unsure about if I really wanted to be there. But as I passed through the doors of the Allen Center, and walked straight into a mosh-pit of people chanting my name and cheering for me, it was like traveling through a dark tunnel and finally reaching the light. I immediately felt as if this was my home, and these kids I barely knew were my brothers. Being a part of this family is like none other; the team embraces you, and truly considers the freshman a vital part of the team. The team treats us like we are the future of Wabash Football.
I have been a part of many football programs, but no program like Wabash Football portrays the passion and love for the game I have. We are truly a unit; we look out for our brothers at all times, whether it’s on the field or off. I have never seen a group of upperclassmen and coaches show so much care and respect for freshman like here at Wabash. From a football standpoint this season; it’s been an absolute blast. In high school kids were almost ashamed to be a part of scout team, but not here. Scout teams are an essential part to bettering the varsity, and we take enormous pride in doing so.
Playing on junior varsity, better known as the Red Squad, has been an awesome way to get a feel for the college football tempo. The environment is unreal, and it’s a big transition from high school. For me, playing the first JV game against DePauw was like a wake up call; I was at a loss of words. I was so ecstatic to participate in my first collegiate level football game, and felt so honored to represent Wabash College Football for the first time. Last Monday we played Anderson, which was also a lot of fun (even though we couldn’t hit the QB.) Going to practice on Tuesdays and having the coaches tell you what a good job you did is something I take to heart, because I feel like I’m taking steps forward every week.
Wabash Football has an unbelievable history and a stunning future in store. Playing here is a top-notch privilege; becoming a part of this program was an unforgettable experience for me. We take pride in what we do; we devote incredible amounts of love and respect to our team, and to the new-comers who join the Wabash Football family.
