A Crazy Feeling of Elation...

I have not updated all week. I have not slept all week - thats only partially true, try somewhere around 12 hours on the week. 4 days + 12 hours of sleep = 16 pots of coffee. How's the mole:mole ratio on that?

Needless to say, I have been busy. While I tried to start studying last week for chemistry, I had a defining (O! ____) moment this Tuesday night when I attempted the chemistry problem set. However, part of my elation tonight is due to the fact I have put away theRunning low on the Folger's... chemistry for the night... I think I'm good to go.

Now where do I begin? Let's try Monday? Yeah, I don't remember. Tuesday was however another interesting day in the life of a Wabash student. After pulling myself from bed at 8 in the morning, I studied before going to my tutorial in the afternoon. Sitting before us in that class were various alumni staff eager to talk about leadership. I do not mean to beat a dead horse here, but it really was pretty neat to listen to the alum's experiences of Wabash. Recurring theme: Wabash is a place of unlimited leadership opportunity which almost forces leaders to develop along with the concept that Wabash men will be more open-minded and accepting of others opinions and beliefs, which is the separator between a leader and a Wabash man. Or something like that. Nonetheless, I once again found myself in a position where I was awed by the eccentricity of the alum and their ability to build strong answers. I can not tell you what it is now, but in some way, shape, or form, this place transforms the way men think - for the best.

Wednesday brought chemistry lab as usual(I am a master titrator). Then today was a bit ridiculous, I overslept all 3 alarm clocks - I don't remember turning them off, then finished my philosophy paper before turning in my problem set, eating lunch, and running to class. After class, I had college mentors for kids which was both very tiring, first graders have unlimited energy, especially after 2 dozen animal crackers per kid, and very refreshing. After CMFK, I ate dinner, got dressed for coaching and went to our game. Tonight was the big showdown with the Green Team, and after 1 OT, we emerged victorious by a point. I'm still excited about that, call me a dork. I love coaching at the Boy's and Girl's Club and really think as a Wabash student we have a certain responsibility to Crawfordsville - if you aren't doing anything find something, theres plenty to go around.

Tomorrow, I take my 9AM calc test then my 10AM Chem test, return to my bed, and sleep for a long time. We have a game Saturday morning then I'm on break!

Great Weekend

Friday started with a bang. After class, I found myself eating macaroni and cheese with a plastic spoon. Yes, a plastic spoon as opposed to a metal spoon like the ones stolen from our kitchen early Friday morning. Have to love fraternity jokes. After lunch, I had to scrub downIt looked a lot worse on Friday, I swear. the kitchen as a part of my crew in the house then watched some TV. After TV, Samer, Wade, and I went to the pool to jump around on the boards and swing on the ropes. It was pretty fun to let loose after a long week like that. None of us got hurt, I came close, I suppose that may have been an omen, thankfully. After dinner, about 6 of us were in my room taking our turns with killing sprees on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for PS2 when we decided to go sledding.

After a quick trip to Wal-Mart and some traveling around, we arrived as this dam about 10 minutes from the house. This hill was a phenomenal sledding hill - it's nice having a townie in the house that can help you find landmarks. Haha. Anyways, after about 3 runs down the hill I took the biggest running head start yet, face planted, continued to slide down the hill, driving the side of my face into the snow until my legs came over my head and I somersaulted down the rest of the way. Thankfully, the snow numbed the burning - atleast for a while. It was definitely one of those, if I had a camera I would have won America's Funniest Home Videos moments. We proceeded to find a slight ramp and once we were all finally beat up enough headed back to the house and hung out with some brothers.

Saturday morning our basketball team went 1-1 dropping a close game to the stinking green team. I hope to be like Giants to the Patriots here at the end of the season. A big trophy trumps a 16-1 season. I studied all afternoon until some girl friends from high school showed up about 5. We ended up going back to the hill for a bit, although it was a lot icier this time, and then came back to the house to run around for a bit. I drove back to Indy today to catch birthday dinner for my sister. So all in all, it was really a pretty solid weekend.

This should be a rough week, calc test 9AM friday, chem test 10:20 AM friday, philosophy paper due Friday, in class tutorial writing Thursday. What a lot of fun to look forward to! I can't hardly wait!

Freshman Tutorial(Thoughts of a Freshman #2)

As my reader, you have been deprived of probably one of the most memorable freshmen experiences. However, this is my first entry about my tutorial: The Making of Great Leaders: In our Lives and at Wabash. Tutorials serve as a freshman only introduction to the vigorous work-load at Wabash and helps to teach freshmen to write the way the college wants us to. I had to wait until the second semester for my tutorial and really had a defining Wabash moment in the class today.

Last week, we had a panel of students we perceived as leaders talk to us during class about their thoughts on leadership. While it was an interesting discussion, today's class proved far more interesting. In Center 204, 13 freshmen, Dean Raters and various leaders among the senior staff at Wabash sat. These various leaders included, Dean Steven Klein, Larry Griffith, C.F.O., Dean Joe Emmick, Dean Gary Phillips, o-yeah, and President Pat White. Not exactly no namers at the college. As the discussion started I made slight reflection on the college and thought it was pretty cool to be sitting in front of the executives of the college, not for disciplinary reasons, but for the exact opposite - academic endeavor. The more I thought about it, the more amazed I was. Here were the real movers and shakers of the college, taking time out of their undoubtedly busy schedules, Honor Scholarship Weekend is on its way, to sit in front of 13 freshmen to talk about leadership. What a concept? That is an opportunity probably non-existent at any other college in the nation and an opportunity relished by a freshman.

I found in interesting at the beginning not only did some of the executives seem nervous but I even noticed a slight shaking in one's hand. It's a pretty abstract thought to think of the Dean's and President being humbled by a group of freshmen questioning them about something they obviously knew about - leadership. It just goes to show the close connection each student gets with the staff and even president here. I know of friends at other big name colleges that couldn't tell me the name of their president, let alone his leadership style. Something like this is truly an opportunity found no-where but Wabash and I am grateful for the opportunity.

Just my thoughts on class today, I wish i had taken a picture - it really was quite comical. 13 Freshmen, most of which hadn't shaven all week, some hadn't even showered or taken time to comb their hair, most in sweats, and a few in flip flops(it snowed today)(It's funny how quickly you adjust to mid-week Wabash attire), sitting in front of 5 very important administrators at the college, all in suits, having casual conversation about leadership. What an opportunity.

Techno Tuesday... something like that

It's 12:45 Tuesday night, well I guess monday morning, I'm sitting at the computer, typing an outline for chemistry and chatting with my brother on AIM. But more importantly, IIt's Techno came across a collection of techno today and have found loud techno music, hence the headphones, conducive to long hours of outlining chemistry (procrastination kills me sometimes). This week has been, as you guessed it, pretty routine. Monday was nothing special although I began on my conquest of both the Calc II and Chemistry exams on the 29th of February. Yes, I am full aware of how much of a dork that makes me, but am o so content with it. When one method doesn't work, try another, so now, I prepare two weeks in advance. Did someone say learning curve? I heard its false? =)

Today was pretty normal also, besides not getting as much sleep as normal. At 2:00 yesterday morning, my regular bedtime here, I ended up in Nobbe's room just talking about all sorts of crazy ideas on well, everything. That is also pretty routine, and not just with Nobbe, its a pretty common occurrence to sit back talk about some pretty random, albeit dorky, topics. All part of getting that liberal education I suppose. We had basketball practice tonight which involved us three coaches and only three players. It does not seem the players quite understand the importance of preparation - we're working on it. It was a fun practice nonetheless and gave a good study break. Lifting after that prior to beginning my life task again: homework.

Fun Weekend, Again.

The weekend started out with a bang. My roommate and I decided to go to PU to check out the hookah bar up there and a couple of the guys tagged along. I had never been to the hookah bar before and really had a pretty good time. I went and caught up with an old friend after that who was very adamant about filling me in on the conversion rate between the dollar and the yen. He had all sorts of japanese made stuff that his girlfriend got fairly cheap when their over christmas break. I found it amusing.

Saturday, we won our first game as coaches. We won big - got to be proud of the kids. haha. It was fun to win. After the game I came back and lifted with Nobbe then went in to Indy to catch the Boat and Travel show at the fairgrounds with my dad. He misses having the boys around the house I think.

Today I have a prospect staying in my room. I get excited thinking about having a lot of potential freshmen on campus. I just hope we get a good group of guys in the college and I can help any of them out if I get the chance.

Really a Fast Week

I am amazed its 12:30 on Wednesday night already. Monday was as usual a very normal day. We had practice with the team at 6; but only 2 kids showed up. Apparently, after I gotThe three of us coaching on Saturday. calls from parents on Tuesday wondering where we were, we didn't communicate clearly to the kids. Maybe we need to speak slower. Yesterday served as a pretty normal day also; however, and I really hate to mention it -  a zombie debate broke out. Some guys on campus want to start a club to prepare everyone for when zombies attempt to attack - yeah, he did it in complete seriousness and started a gigantic !student e-mail war about it. I'd just like to note the e-mail that had me laughing tonight. Comment: I am just amazed that this is what gets the whole campus excited instead of something like Scandanavian cheerleaders or free money on the mall. Response: Neither of those are as likely to happen as zombies attacking. I really hope all of this is a spoof for the Caveman(the comedy publication).

Chem lab today let out early - always makes for a good afternoon. I've got a fair amount of school work to do between today and monday so that means studying saturday afternoon - it really becomes a habit. College Mentors tomorrow, update Friday or Saturday.

O and so the title makes sense, the week is going really fast.

WOW

What a weekend. I can honestly say it has been one of the busiest weekends I have had in a long time - I loved it. Friday afternoon I did some house cleaning and then went over to help set up for the concert at 4. I sort of expected to throw down the tarps on the gym floor and leave but we ended up acting as the stage crew for the most part. I got out of there about 11 and it wasn't really what I had planned but pretty cool nonetheless. I actually assembled the stage, speakers, and lighting effects with some of the guys and was pretty cool to see all the work that went into getting things ready for the concert. Friday night at the house was pretty slow since the concert was the next day so I hung out with a couple guys before bed.

Saturday was crazy. I had a lot of friends coming to the show that night and a lot to do so I had planned on a busy day. I woke up about 10 and got ready for our first basketball game as coaches. We did sport dress clothes with ties for the game. However, we dropped a close game 32-27. The kids played with a lot of heart and it's really pretty interesting being a coach instead of a player. I'm not sure how to define it, I'll probably touch on that again later. After the game, I came back to the house and then left to Kroger to get the food supplies for the cook out APO was having before the game. Once all the food and everything was settled for that, I went to go lift and my friends started showing up around Wabash - they got pretty hard to keep track of. I think at one point there was about 14 girls there somehow connected to me =) After lifting I had about an hour of downtown before we started the charcoal and then the cookout went until 8. I really don't want to talk about the cook out, it didn't go well. The concert was after the cookout and really was a good show, I love it when you can tell a band wants to be playing on a certain night.

We had a joint party with Sig Chi after the show and I spent a little bit of time over there before I went back to LCA with my brother. He came up for the night from IU. We hung out for a bit in the kitchen before calling it a night and heading home this morning at 8 for my grandma's 80th birthday. I crashed about 2 and then started homework after dinner. I have a car now and plan on going back to Wabash at 6 tomorrow morning for my 9 AM class. I figure I'll try to beat all the traffic. This should be a pretty regular week, it's all up hill until the last week in February when I'll have all my tests and stuff before Spring Break.

A Busy Afternoon

Yeah, I pulled out the lazy card this week. Since I don't really have a test to prepare for, I went ahead and slept in until 11 both Tuesday and today. I felt I had earned it. Tuesday and Wednesday served as pretty normal days. I was ecstatic on Wednesday when the chem lab let out about an hour and half early. That seriously may be the best feeling in the world. The kids at the pool. Well, maybe not the world.

I awoke at 11, went through the wake up routine and then had class from 1-4. I tell you all a lot about my calc and chem but not much about philosophy or my tutorial. I am in a tutorial right now about leadership and a philosophy class about existentialism. Both classes are really enjoyable. We're reading Dungy's book in Quiet Strength and then some other philosophical stuff in existentialism that I could not explain in a single blog. These classes are a great break from the scientific method and numbers.

After class, I had College Mentors which was once again a lot of fun. We took the kids to Austin and I, yeah, it was a struggle to get him to look at the camera.see the swimming pool and talk to Kyle Dunaway - I think he dressed up for the occasion. It was pretty funny to see the kids amazement seeing the divers and all. After swimming we went and checked out the Wabash radio and the kids got to say hello on the mic. After College Mentors I ran back to the house to head to the Boys and Girls Club for practice. It turns out we've got a pretty solid team, I can feel a championship season in the making. It's really pretty fun to run around and act like we know what we're doing. No but really, we aren't too bad of coaches. After practice, I ate, did the dishes(it is my night), and then lifted. I have some calculus problems to brush up on and then some chemistry reading followed by some Vice City on the PS2 - yeah, I brought it back.

Relaxing Weekend, Rough Monday Morning

The weekend went off without a hitch, minus losing my car that Friday. However, the car will be revived, although, it comes with a brand new engine now. Friday night, I watched a couple of movies with the family and then studied the rest of the night. Saturday I spentThe new desk. about the whole day running around looking for cars before I went to pick up a new desk I found in the classifieds for $40. It's perfect, I needed more space to work on and its really helped even though I've only used it one night.

Saturday night, I again, found myself studying away. I ended up coming back a bit earlier than expected on Sunday, just in time to catch some of the game although, due to the chem test, I only caught the ending 5 minutes - really all I needed to see. I am ecstatic the Patriots lost. I was up until 4:30 studying for chem and then finishing up my calc problem set. It really is a heck of a work-load doing pre-med, but really it's not that hard, just takes discipline.

Practice with the Boy's and Girl's Club was cancelled today since we didn't get our team roster until today. It has been rescheduled for tomorrow and should be a pretty fun time. Third Eye Blind at the end of the week, no tests, one paper, just got to keep looking ahead.

Back Home

Thursday and Friday didn't end up too bad this week. I have learned that working about a day ahead Monday through Wednesday is a pain but really pays off at the end of the week. I Yeah, we really did it, I wasn't joking.was able to catch a 3 hour nap over lunch today before I left for home. Thursday was a pretty regular day, I met up with a few Chemistry professors early in the morning to go over some problems and then had class in the afternoon. No College Mentors this week but I did have it last week -  it's still a blast. The 1st graders just crack me up; how their minds work and all. I watched 3:10 to Yuma(sp) last night with the guys and recommend it.

And then today was about a usual Friday, class until 11:10 then the rest of the afternoon off. However, on account of Samer's unusually obnoxious behavior towards Nobbe in chemistry class, and the past two nights for that matter, we went ahead and screwed his desk upside down to the bottom of his loft for him. As planned, Samer has sworn vengeance and should make for an exciting week. Haha. The three of us also have acquired our very own 5th-7th grade basketball team at the Boy's and Girl's Club. None of us really have sufficient basketball experience nor are we really worried. We have practice monday so I'll give you a scouting report then and go ahead and predict, under our excellent coaching staff, the kids will win the championship. Maybe that's a push...

On a sad note, my car broke down on the way home today.
