Kenyon Invite

The anticipation for this meet was much different than any other last-chance meet we have gone to as a team. Leaving the Conference Meet late last Saturday I knew there were a few members of the team that felt they could still go faster, and I was excited to see them try with one more week of rest. I mean, it made sense... we had swam more and worked harder, so one more week of rest should be exactly what the guys needed.

Then Monday came - and seven guys showed up to the pool (pictured above at Kenyon). They changed and came on deck and realized most of their teammates had moved on to other things already. That's tough. To make matters even better was that pleasant reminder that after tapering for a meet every stroke you take the next week feels awful. Now, that's an even better start to our week.

Well, I'm lucky that my guys are tough. Most would have quit given this situation, but no matter how they felt, they trusted me when I told them things would get better. I showed them they were still in shape, I talked about the science of a "season plan", and they all nodded in agreement. Most importantly, they kept going... not necessarily happy, but not giving up either.

A lot of ups and downs still continued throughout the next two days - as is the case when you aren't sure about what lies ahead - but we got in the van, drove the 5 hours, and showed up the next morning eager to see to what would happen.

It happened... and happened awesome!!

Brent Graham starts the meet off with a 2.5 second drop in his 200 breast going 2:09.1 - missing our school record and the national cut by just a hair! Then our 200 Freestyle Relay jumps in and drops 1.5 seconds! That is simply unheard of -1.5 seconds faster??... just 7 days later???... Awesome! From there we knew we were on, and we had a blast the entire day.

2006 NCAC Championships

I can't believe how well the team did. It is that simple.

TWENTY ONE of our twenty six swimmers and divers performed better than they ever have to date.

All five relays swam to All-Conference Honors.

All-Conference Honors went to EIGHT SWIMMERS (Brent Graham, Michael Hewitt, Kyle Weaver, Jordon Blackwell, Zach Manker, Blaine Cooper-Surma, and Jordan Extine)

We scored 974.5 - Our highest point total since I have been here!

Without a doubt, this was "a team of the many" instead of a team of the few. What I mean by that is that this year, more so than any other year I have been here, we had more people contributing - and more people swimming inspired. Each night we set new Wabash College records for the number of swims we had in the finals. As you can tell, that depth, and that ability to improve, showed up in our All-Conference Relays and our total points scored.

Our divers also did an amazing job. This was the first time Tom Schiltz and Rob Fenoglio competed at the conference meet... and they both performed admirably. However both came away knowing that next year they will be even better. Clayton Craig, our third diver, showed off what one year of experience can do your for you with two 7th place finishes. All in all, the divers†scored 117 points for the team!

Congrats to all the swimmers, divers, and also to their parents. It was amazing year, and although a few are still heading out to Kenyon next weekend to try one more time, this team ended on a high note, one that I will remember forever.

Meet Update!

Our second night is over and I just wanted to say that this was one of the best sessions I have ever experienced. Nearly every single swimmer stepped it up, got tough, and swam like a Giant! We improved our places, touched out people, and ended the night with two All-Conference Relays and 3 divers that shocked the conference!

RECAP:

Divers: 4th, 7th, and 13th place for a total of 63 points! Holy Cow!

Swimmers: 13 out of the 16 swims moved up and dropped time!

Relays: 200 Medley dropped nearly 2 seconds and the 800 Freestyle came from behind on the last 50 to take third place! Both All-Conference! (BTW, that 800 Freestyle Relay had 3 freshman and our captain Zach Manker on it!)

Brent Graham - 1:47.9

Zach Manker - 1:50.1

Blaine Cooper-Surma - 1:48.1

AND! Jordon Blackwell - 1:43.4 !!!

It was AWESOME!†

Seven Days...

We are officially one week out and the team is getting faster. This will probably be the last post for a while... I hope to post highlights over the three day conference meet but realistically, I don't know if I will get to that. However, this post now links you to the NCAC Conference meet results (hosted by Ohio Wesleyan). Check back soon and often to follow your Little Giant Tankers!

Also, for all you fans out there we welcome words of encouragement, advice, and or support! Just send an email to Coach Casares and he will be sure to post it for the team!

Below are a couple of action photos from our last dual meet. Enjoy!
