Reflections From Proud Wabash Parents - Bill and Denise Hamilton

We are the parents of a senior Wabash student and baseball player. Our son Scott had two (2) goals while searching for a college. The first and foremost was to receive a quality education. The second was to attend a school that would allow him to do so while playing baseball. He had several options and the one that we felt was the most unlikely was to attend Wabash College. Not that we had negative thoughts regarding Wabash, only that we did not know about Wabash. However, upon the first visit, Scott knew that he could see himself going to Wabash. It was the feeling he had while walking on campus on that clear, crisp autumn day and, ah yes, the Allen Center and Mud Hollow Field.

Scott knew that Wabash would involve a tough academic challenge for him, but realized that it was only four (4) years out of his life for which he would be able to reap a lifetime of benefits. Four (4) years of hard work and sacrifice for the good of the rest of his life. Upon investigation, Scott learned of the rich traditions at Wabash and of the loyalty the alumni felt and expressed toward the College and the student body. He wanted to be part of that tradition.

Upon Scott’s arrival at Wabash he experienced one of the longest and most valued traditions.  He was “rung in” by then President Andrew Ford.  During the ceremony President Ford reaffirmed what Scott already knew.  He told the Class of ’07 that they would not “get” or “receive” their degree, they would “earn” it.  And earn it he has as all Wabash men have.

Although we as parents were told of the traditions and alumni loyalty, it was only when we began wearing Wabash apparel that we experienced that loyalty and pride. Never does much time pass that we are stopped by someone while we are wearing a Wabash shirt or hat either in our hometown or while traveling across the country and we hear "Wabash College, class of '62, or '75, or '89. Do you have a son there? What year is he?" And the conversation continues.

We know Scott has worked very hard during the time he has been at Wabash and has learned to uphold the very heart and soul of Wabash College: "to think critically, act responsibly, lead effectively, and live humanely." It is our belief that he carries this around with him, even onto the baseball diamond. The coaching staff reinforces these principles and is helped by the parent support structure which makes the baseball program great. We are comforted in the belief that should we not be around, either at a game or event, another parent will step in and look after Scott, as well as the other players. With the underclassmen which have been recruited we look forward to a strong and successful baseball season in 2007.  We also know that the tradition of “Wabash Always Fights” will be evident on Mud Hollow Field.

Next, it will be our son we hear say to another "Wabash College, class of '07. Do you have a son there?  What year is he?"  And the conversation will continue.
