2007 Baseball Season Officially Underway

The 2007 Wabash Baseball season officially got underway this morning with the first practice of our spring traditional season.  With snow on the ground and Indiana temperatures close to a balmy 9 degrees, many people around campus don't have baseball on the mind.  Regardless of the weather, Monday couldn't come soon enough for the coaching staff.  Although the squad has a long way to go before we are ready to square off against Wartburg College in Phoenix on March 4th, we have already seen many good things.  Stay tuned as our workouts progress and the competitive season draws closer.

Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

What an amazing weekend of professional football!  Could any Illiana resident ask for a better situation than the Colts vs. Bears match-up for Super Bowl XLI?

Although I thoroughly enjoyed a huge Bears victory on Sunday, it was bittersweet seeing fellow Naperville Central High School alum and Coach of the Year Sean Payton take the defeat.  Payton's NCHS baseball picture is above.

As the Bears face the Colts on February 4th in Miami, they will also be squaring off against a Wabash alum.  Pete Metzelaars '82 is an offensive assistant coach for the Colts.  While at Wabash, Metzelaars was an All-American football and basketball player, winning a national championship for basketball in 1982.  Metzelaars went on to a 16 year NFL career and 4 Super Bowl appearances with the Buffalo Bills.  Best of luck to Pete and the Colts in the big one!

(Metzelaars is pictured below, alongside Savannah Riley, showing her Bears spirit!)

Welcome Back!

It is a pleasure to welcome the Men of Wabash back to campus for second semester.  Seniors have just finished their written comps and our season is quickly approaching.  The coaching staff just wrapped up a great trip to Orlando for the annual ABCA convention.  As always, it was fun to see old friends and talk about the upcoming season, while hearing presentations from some of the best college baseball coaches in the country.  The convention always makes us even more anxious for the start of our traditional season.  Former Wabash assistant Adam Stevens (pictured) was one of the many coaches our staff got to spend time with at the convention. Adam is currently the head coach at Central College in Iowa and has made tremendous strides with the Dutch program.  The Little Giants will get their traditional practice season underway on January 29th.  Spring is right around the corner!

Best Wishes in 2007!

I hope that everyone had a fantastic holiday and you are looking forward to a memorable and productive 2007.  The beginning of a new year always brings with it something special for baseball coaches around the country...the annual American Baseball Coaches Association convention!  This event allows baseball coaches at every level to come together for four days to share information, recall the past year, look forward to a new season, and catch-up with old friends.  This year the convention will be held in Orlando, which will hopefully prove to be a more weather-friendly environment than Chicago last year.  As always, the ABCA has a tremendous schedule of speakers lined-up for the event.  For further information, please visit the ABCA website at www.abca.org.
