Wabash Sponsors Columbian Studies

Kevin Billups

Wabash College has partnered with the Asociación de Colombianistas to present the Revista de Estudios Colombianos, a magazine of Columbian studies which aims to promote the academic investigation of Colombia through the humanities and sciences. The magazine features a diverse selection of work from members of the Asociación de Colombianistas, to include works related to Columbian literature, history, geography, theater, anthropology, and political science. The magazine is part of the larger goal of the Asociación de Colombianistas, which is to promote, both nationally and internationally, the knowledge of Colombia, its society and its cultures.
The scholarly journal has been in publication for 20 years and currently Professor Gilberto Gómez is the editor of the magazine. Wabash began sponsorship of the magazine in the spring of 2007 and Gómez is excited about the changes that Wabash’s sponsorship has brought to the publication. Formerly published annually, the Revista de Estudios Colombianos is now a locally published biannual publication. Gómez says, “by publishing it locally, you have more control…we are better able to maintain a publication chronology of two issues per a year.” The magazine also allows for Gómez to collaborate with Wabash students. Chris Beard ’10 assists Gómez with the publication technology required to assemble the magazine. Gómez says that Beard is solid with knowledge of the technology, but also “knows Spanish well enough to spot corrections.” The latest issue is quite a success, featuring a stunning compilation of works from academic specialists on Colombian issues. Wabash will sponsor the Revista de Estudios Colombianos for the next five years, in support of the Asociación de Colombianistas effort to promote Columbian studies.
