WOW -- DMR smashes record again!!!
Wes Chamblee '11 -- This past Saturday, the 28th of February, the school record holding distance medley relay team had their eyes set on a provisional qualifying time of 10:10 and an opportunity to run at the NCAA indoor national meet. The DMR squad consisted of Micah Milliman cruising in the 1200, myself (Wes Chamblee) pacing the 400, Garrett Bonk pressing in the 800, and Kevin McCarthy dominating in the 1600. This week we were matched against tough competition from Calvin College. Micah started the race off well and finished his leg in first place. I was able to maintain the lead and passed it to Bonk who ran a strong leg, handing the baton to McCarthy just behind the Calvin team. This is when the race became interesting. Kevin McCarthy is in his second season of track and this year is the first time he has run the mile. We were hoping that he would split a 4:17, but he did not. HE RAN A 4:14 MILE!!! To put this into perspective, Saturday was the third time Kevin ran the mile this season and the only way to describe his split is STUPID good!
However, despite McCarthy’s valiant contribution, we missed the provisional time by 1.81 seconds. The Calvin team just beat us, but they also missed the provisional time. There is an upside though to the rather upsetting outcome. Micah is a junior, I am a sophomore, and both Bonk and McCarthy are freshmen. This team is young, dangerous, and promising for a national championship run next season. We also dropped almost 20 seconds off of the previous school record from the beginning of the year. Although we did not qualify for nationals, the distance medley relay team previewed what the Wabash Track and Field team has in store for the future. M.O.W.N.B.U!
