Cross Country Blog 6-13-09

Justin Allen '11 -- Week 5 of summer vacation was pretty busy for me. For starters, I finally finished my summer class at Purdue Calumet, surly getting an A which will be a nice boost to my Wabash GPA. Right after my class ended I began an internship program at St. Mary's hospital in Hobart. The program involves job shadowing doctors in various departments of the hospital such as surgery, pulmonology, orthopedics, among others. The program was already half way done but I was able to join and get caught up the first week. I followed around a knowledgeable and well-known cardiologist. The first day I was able to scrub in (sterilize and prep for surgery) to see an angioplasty and observe a stent being placed in an artery. I have to say I felt like a doctor in the show House or E.R., it was a great experience. In has been exciting learning about cardiology- related diagnostic methods and treatment procedures. This week was even more fulfilling because I was grouped with a second year medical student and a young doctor from India learning more about American health care; both men were able to further expand my knowledge about medicine for an invaluable shadowing experience. I am glad I was able to join the program as it is a perfect addition to the liberal arts Wabash experience.

In other news, my next oldest brother graduated from high school and we have been cleaning and readying the house for his open house next week. I also bought a new car (2000 Chevy Blazer), thereby draining all money I had saved over the years. And of course, being a used car, the car stopped running 2 days after I bought it. $200 later and with a new ignition coil, spark plugs, wires, and distributer it is back to running condition. In the mean time I will be trying to sell my old car to make some of the money back. Well, I am off to some open houses to get some free food. Training is going well, I hope it is for everyone else as well. D-III nationals hear we come!
