Culture, Culture, Culture

The weeks have flown by this semester, and wrestling competition is coming up a lot faster than I thought it would. We have our first official meet next Saturday, November 7. It’s funny, for some reason I feel like we should still be in pre-season conditioning. But I’m prepared for it to be solely wrestling and school work. The time commitment for wrestling was a major shock to begin with as I tried to balance that, with school, and my clubs. But I’m starting to get a better grasp on how to manage all my activities.
One cool thing that happened so far this week is that I got to have lunch with Lamidi Fakeye. He is an internationally-acclaimed African sculptor and having the chance to talk with him was very cool. Even at age 81 he is still pretty sharp, so the conversation with him is entertaining. Lamidi is at Wabash all week and he is doing daily carvings in the Fine Arts Center, while I haven’t had the chance to see him in action yet, it’s on my to-do list for this week.
Another headliner at Wabash this week is Carlos Andres Gomez. He is an award winning poet, playwright and actor. His poetry had such a strong delivery and he touches on a lot of current events, so needless to say I can’t wait to see him perform live. This is just a little taste of the variety and substance that the speakers at Wabash have. It’s one of the cooler characteristics about the college and any prospect should not waste opportunities to see people like this perform, because after all, it maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity.
