It's a Tough Job

A friend of mine called last night and asked what kind of day I had planned for Thursday.

I thought for a moment and replied, "A really good one!"

I'll spend Thursday afternoon at the Crawfordsville Country Club with the Wabash golf team (if Mother Nature doesn't wash us out for the day!). The Little Giants face Rose-Hulman in the fall edition of the Little Giant-Engineer Match Play Classic.

It's a combination of everything I love about golf. Number one --- it's golf. There's no better way to spend a summer afternoon than on the golf course. I love playing the game (even though the game doesn't love me back!), and I enjoy watching it.

Number two --- it's match play. We will still have the standard stroke play results, but we'll also track match play results for extra team points. I just love the style, and the terminology is wonderful. Where else can you win 5 and 4 or know that you're dormie going into a hole.

Number three (and this is actually the best reason) --- we have an outstanding golf team. From JP Manalo, Bryan Arnold, and Jordan Vice to newcomers Sam Russell, John Holmes, and Kyle Nagdeman, this team is really coming together. They'll have to bounce back from today's match to play a very important tournament at Wittenberg this weekend. It's part of the new automatic qualifying procedure for the North Coast Athletic Conference. Vice tied for first at the first qualifying event (the Hiram Invitational) and is in good shape to lead the Little Giants to a top team performance this weekend. Stay tuned for more results from the weekend event.

So as you're toiling away this afternoon, think of me taking a few photos and recording a few golf scores throughout the day.

What can I say--- it's a tough job!

Back to Business.... And Some Random Thoughts

Ok, I know I said "regular postings" or something like that earlier this year. But I haven't followed through with those.... until now.

I promise you, my (hopefully) soon-to-be loyal viewer (or reader, user, or whatever the correct blog term might be) to be more faithful in my postings.

Anyway, thoughts from the weekend.

.... Is there anything more enjoyable than watching Patrick Millikan lead Geoff Walker into the end zone on a screen pass? I talked to Pat after Saturday's win over OWU. He was thrilled to be part of the play, but admitted it was a long way to go for an offensive lineman to provide the lead block. Don't worry, Pat. You did it perfectly!

... speaking of speed, the only thing that might be more enjoyable than watching Pat on a lead block is watching Ray Green, Mike Russell, Bart Banach, Walker, Gabe Guerrero, and the rest of the Wabash receivers run loose on the football field. When Green caught the opening pass against Ohio Wesleyan, he appeared to be in a different gear than every other player on the field. And thank goodness I don't track (and can't with our existing program, so don't ask!) Walker's yards after first contact. I don't have an official figure, but he has to have already broken 100 tackles this season.

... if there's a harder-working 1-7-1 soccer team in the country, I haven't seen it. I came to work this morning and saw Ben Esbaum and the rest of his captain's group putting in extra workout time this morning before classes to prepare for this weekend's match at Allegheny. The team is 0-0-1 in the conference. I'm not one for predictions (ask the Detroit Lions how those work), but I see some promising results on the horizon this season for the Little Giants.

... I don't know which weather service or meteorologist to thank (it's probably The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore. I think if we check Greek mythology, he's probably listed as the god of weather), but we missed nearly all of the bad weather predicted to hit last Saturday. We kept watching the radar in the press box and anticipating the storm's arrival, but it never hit. Nothing like a moderately dry weekend to play home football and soccer matches.

Welcome To The New Sports Web Site

By now you've noticed we've changed the Wabash sports web site. Hopefully you like the new look.

Not only have we changed the look, we've changed the way you'll find some of the stories on the site. If you're looking for results from soccer, for example, you can always go to the Schedule/Results link for all of the scores and links to stories and box scores. The main page for each sport will include more features.

You'll also find a blog on nearly every sports page now. There will be comments and thoughts from coaches, student-athletes, and alums about each of our athletic teams throughout the season. It's a great way to get the "inside scoop" on what's happening in Wabash sports!

I hope you enjoy the site. It's the latest version (and an ongoing process) of the hard work of Jim Amidon, Howard Hewitt, Mark Siegel, Brad Weaver, and others. Look for new additions, some of your old favorites, and many more images on this new site. Let us know what you think, and if you find something that's not working quite the way we hoped it would.

It's a new way to keep up with the 2006-2007 Wabash sports season.
