Who's In First?
I feel a bit like Abbott and Costello when it comes to the most popular question I'm asked these days... who's in first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference football standings?
I wish it was easy to explain. And in some ways it is.
The NCAC tiebreaker used to determine the automatic qualifier for the NCAA football tournament used to be guarded more closely than the President's travel itinerary. But we received permission this week to make it available to the media. You'll probably see it in either the Journal Review or The Paper of Montgomery Country this week.
At the basic level it works a little something like this... we need Wittenberg to lose. To anybody. Oberlin, Allegheny, or Hiram... any old NCAC loss and the Tigers are out of the picture.
As long as we win the rest of our games.
There's been a lot of talk about Kenyon College, but let me put those rumours to rest. We own the tiebreaker with them (thanks Allegheny for beating the Lords).
As long as we win the rest of our games.
Wooster.... well that comes down to this weekend. Consider this weekend the same type of game as the Colts-Steelers playoff game last year. Win and you move one step closer to your goal. Lose and you're playing out the schedule.
Pool C bids..... well, not so much. There will be teams with one loss that might be on the outside looking in, so forget about two-loss teams making the tournament.
Unless we win the rest of our games.
And Wittenberg drops a game to Oberlin, Allegheny, or Hiram.
So was that really all that difficult to put together?
I don't know.....
Third base!
